Motorhead Profile

Motorhead. SPV Records

Motorhead are a British rock/metal band that was fronted by the iconic Lemmy Kilmister since its formation in the mid 1970s until Kilmister's death in 2015. The band has recorded and toured with multiple lineups and been an influence on countless musicians.

Motorhead wrote many heavy metal/rock staples that are covered widely, among them: “Ace of Spades,” “(We Are) The Roadcrew,” and “Killed by Death.” Nonetheless, Kilmister was reluctant to call Motorhead a metal band, preferring the simple moniker of rock-and-roll group.

Kilmister also became a pop culture staple with appearances in films and television ads. He also had a seemingly boundless appetite for partying and touring well past middle age. Motorhead won their first Grammy in 2005 for a cover of Metallica’s “Whiplash.”

The First Three Decades:

Kilmister formed Motorhead after he was kicked out of Hawkwind in 1975. The band got a slow start but took off with their 1977 eponymous album featuring a cover of “Louie, Louie” and appearances on BBC Radio and Television. Motorhead became a household name in the 1980s, which kicked off with the classic Ace of Spades album. Despite lineup changes Motorhead continued to record and release albums and tour widely, including pivotal appearances at The Monsters of Rock and The Giants of Rock tours.

21st Century:

Motorhead kept going strong into their fourth decade. The band has recorded five studio albums since 2000, including the well-received 2008 album Motorizer.

Their songs continue to be used in movies and films and elsewhere; Lemmy even penned theme music for professional wrestler Triple H.

Lemmy's Death

Lemmy passed away on December 28, 2015 after a short battle with cancer. They won't continue without their founder, and Motorhead leave a long and lasting legacy behind.

Recommended Album:

No Remorse
There aren’t many duds in the Motorhead catalog.

But if you had to pick just one the best bet is to go outside of their studio work and pick up the classic compilation No Remorse. The early omnibus features all of the gritty Motorhead songs that are must-listens and concert perennials and eliminates many of the tracks that have been forgotten during a long and prolific career.
