In most instances, it can be used just like the verb "to move" in English, such as to move an object from one place to another or to change positions. For example, you can say Vamos a mover los muebles (We are going to move the furniture). The conjugation of mover follows the regular -er verb pattern, but it is a stem-changing verb. This article includes mover conjugations in the present, past, conditional and future indicative, the present and past subjunctive, the imperative mood, and other verb forms. Mover vs. Mudar Mover cannot be used to talk about changing where one lives. For that purpose, in Spanish you need to use the verb mudarse. So if you say you are going to move to another country, in Spanish you have to say Me voy a mudar a otro país. Also, the verb mover is often used as a reflexive verb, moverse, to talk about moving oneself. For example, Me moví para no estorbar (I moved so as not to be in the way). Watch for the Stem Change When Conjugating Mover The verb mover is an -er verb like beber and hacer. However, mover is a stem-changing verb. That means that when you conjugate it, sometimes there is a change in the stem of the verb, and not just the ending. In this case, the vowel o changes to ue when it is found in the stressed syllable of the verb. For example, Yo muevo los dedos (I move my fingers). Mover Present Indicative In the present indicative tense, the stem change o to ue occurs in all of the conjugations except nosotros and vosotros. Yo muevo I move Yo muevo la cabeza para decir no. Tú mueves You move Tú mueves los muebles para la fiesta. Usted/él/ella mueve You/he/she moves Ella mueve las caderas al bailar. Nosotros movemos We move Nosotros movemos el carro al estacionamiento. Vosotros movéis You move Vosotros movéis las cajas de la mudanza. Ustedes/ellos/ellas mueven You/they move Ellos mueven la mano para saludar. Mover Preterite Indicative In the preterite indicative tense there are no stem changes to worry about. Yo moví I moved Yo moví la cabeza para decir no. Tú moviste You moved Tú moviste los muebles para la fiesta. Usted/él/ella movió You/he/she moved Ella movió las caderas al bailar. Nosotros movimos We moved Nosotros movimos el carro al estacionamiento. Vosotros movisteis You moved Vosotros movisteis las cajas de la mudanza. Ustedes/ellos/ellas movieron You/they moved Ellos movieron la mano para saludar. Mover Imperfect Indicative In the imperfect indicative tense there is no spelling change either. The imperfect indicative tense can be translated to English as "used to move" or "was moving." Yo movía I used to move Yo movía la cabeza para decir no. Tú movías You used to move Tú movías los muebles para la fiesta. Usted/él/ella movía You/he/she used to move Ella movía las caderas al bailar. Nosotros movíamos We used to move Nosotros movíamos el carro al estacionamiento Vosotros movíais You used to move Vosotros movíais las cajas de la mudanza. Ustedes/ellos/ellas movían You/they used to move Ellos movían la mano para saludar. Mover Future Indicative To conjugate the future indicative tense we simply add the future ending (é, ás, á, emos, éis, án) to the infinitive form. There is no stem change in these conjugations either. Yo moveré I will move Yo moveré la cabeza para decir no. Tú moverás You will move Tú moverás los muebles para la fiesta. Usted/él/ella moverá You/he/she will move Ella moverá las caderas al bailar. Nosotros moveremos We will move Nosotros moveremos el carro al estacionamiento Vosotros moveréis You will move Vosotros moveréis las cajas de la mudanza.. Ustedes/ellos/ellas moverán You/they will move Ellos moverán la mano para saludar. Mover Periphrastic Future Indicative Yo voy a mover I am going to move Yo voy a mover la cabeza para decir no. Tú vas a mover You are going to move Tú vas a mover los muebles para la fiesta. Usted/él/ella va a mover You/he/she is going to move Ella va a mover las caderas al bailar. Nosotros vamos a mover We are going to move Nosotros vamos a mover el carro al estacionamiento. Vosotros vais a mover You are going to move Vosotros vais a mover las cajas de la mudanza. Ustedes/ellos/ellas van a mover You/they are going to move Ellos van a mover la mano para saludar. Mover Conditional Indicative Similar to the future tense, the conditional indicative tense is formed by adding the appropriate conditional (ía, ías, ía, íamos, íais, ían) to the infinitive of the verb. Yo movería I would move Yo movería la cabeza para decir no. Tú moverías You would move Tú moverías los muebles para la fiesta. Usted/él/ella movería You/he/she would move Ella movería las caderas al bailar. Nosotros moveríamos We would move Nosotros moveríamos el carro al estacionamiento. Vosotros moveríais You would move Vosotros moveríais las cajas de la mudanza. Ustedes/ellos/ellas moverían You/they would move Ellos moverían la mano para saludar. Mover Present Progressive/Gerund Form The present progressive tense is formed with the present tense conjugation of the verb estar (to be) and the present participle or gerund, gerundio in Spanish. For -er verbs, the present participle is formed with the ending -iendo. Present Progressive of Mover: está moviendo she is moving -> Ella está moviendo las caderas al bailar. Mover Past Participle The past participle of -er verbs is formed with the ending -ido, and it can be used as an adjective or to form compound tenses, such as the present perfect and the pluperfect. Present Perfect of Mover: ha movido she has moved -> Ella ha movido las caderas al bailar. Mover Present Subjunctive In the present subjunctive tense, the stem change o to ue occurs in all of the conjugations except nosotros and vosotros. Que yo mueva That I move Carla no quiere que yo mueva la cabeza para decir no. Que tú muevas That you move Mamá quiere que tú muevas los muebles para la fiesta.
