The movie wizards really know how to turn on your waterworks. They push the right buttons to get all the unhappy hormones working. But who are we to complain? Don't you love those mushy movies where your on-screen idol adds sizzle to your real life love?

Movies That Tug at Your Heartstrings Usually Have a Sad Story
Some movies have the ability to touch a raw nerve you never know existed. (Remember Life is Beautiful?).

Some movies explore the many layers of human relationship and its complex nature. I can think of Boys Don't Cry and Little Miss Sunshine that delved deep into the subjects of love, family, and relationships. However, some movies make you cry buckets, when innocence takes a beating in the harsh world of reality. Peter Jackson's ripped my heart. I didn't know that I would fall in love with a life size gorilla. I have watched the movie many times over, but I don't fail to weep copious tears every time I watch it.

Sometimes It's the Screenplay, Not the Movie That Is the Real Hero
Then there are some movies that may not have shone in the hall of fame for cinematic brilliance, but made a mark for outstanding script. Romantic movie lines that tease your lacrimal glands. You may not feel the weight of the words while reading the quotes. However, as you watch the scene unfold, you will feel the words tugging at your heartstrings.

In many cases, you will become one with the on-screen character, imagining yourself playing out the role.

Here are 8 greatest movie quotes that will make you cry.

1. Notting Hill
Don’t forget. I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.

Julia Roberts has always been the house favorite when it came to essaying romantic roles.

In this movie, she plays Anna, a Hollywood actress who falls in love with a divorcee Will Thacker played by Hugh Grant. Different lifestyles, and different careers throw the spanner in the works in the love story of Anna and Will. Towards the end of the movie, Anna, who has fallen deeply in love with a reticent Will finds her love slipping away. This line is her last-ditch effort to save her love. Roberts added immense value to this scene. Her body language and voice communicates what's going on in her heart. You feel her pain, as she bares her heart, not knowing how her object of affection is going to take it. A truly classic movie line that makes you want to cry aloud!

2. Dirty Dancing
Me? I'm scared of everything. I'm scared of what I saw, I'm scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I'm with you.

Dirty Dancing shot Patrick Swayze to fame, and made him a dancing legend. In this movie, there's nothing dirty about the dancing. However, you'd find yourself wanting to get off your seat and dance when John (Patrick Swayze) and Baby (Jennifer Grey) take on the centre stage. Their dance conveys love and beauty.

Their movements are subtle and sensuous. Baby steals your heart with her innocent face, while John makes your heart skip a beat with his boyish charm. The chemistry between the two is unparalleled. I have watched this movie at least 20 times, and it still mesmerises me, especially, when Baby says these heart-wrenching words to John.

3. The Fault in Our Stars
I am in love with you. And I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed, and that one day all of our labors will be returned to dust. And I know that the sun will swallow the only Earth we will ever have. And I am in love with you.

Love and death make a potent combination. Since the time eternalized love by dying for each other, various romantic authors have written love stories that have tragic endings.

John Green, author of the book The Fault in Our Stars, on which the movie was made, struck the right chords. One terminally ill lover is bad enough. Here, we have two. The chemistry between the teenaged cancer-inflicted, whip-smart, fun-loving kids keeps you in good spirits despite the morose subject. This movie is a tearjerker till the last scene, so make sure to keep your Kleenex tissues handy.

4. Life Is Beautiful (La Vita È Bella)
Guido: You can lose all your points for any one of three things. One: If you cry. Two: If you ask to see your mother. Three: If you're hungry and ask for a snack! Forget it!

The Holocaust is a terrible, dark tragedy in human history. But trust director and actor Roberto Benigni to pull off such a depressing subject with light humor. The movie touches upon the love of a father for his child, and how he wants to protect his son from the loss of innocence and hope. Guido, the father played by Benigni himself juxtaposes the vibrancy of childhood with the harsh reality of genocide in the concentration camps.

How can a father shield his child from the imminent threat to life? What can a helpless victim do to give his child a happy life, however short? This movie will tear your heart, and leave you not wiping away not just tears of grief, but also tears of joy. In this quote, Guido attempts to hide his child from the Nazi soldiers on the lookout for Jewish kids in the concentration camp. The father Guido pretends that it is a game they are playing so that the child follows his rules.

Watching the father laugh and play in the face of death brings a lump to your throat.

Here are some other movie quotes that will leave you moist-eyed. Read these quotes and let those tears flow.

5. Along Came Polly
Since we have been together I have felt more uncomfortable, out of place, embarrassed, and just physically sick then I have in my entire life. But I could not have gone through that, I could not have thrown up 19 times in 48 days if I was not in love with you.

6. About Time
I know you’ve probably suspected this, but over the last month, I’ve fallen completely in love with you. Now, obviously this was going to happen because you’re a goddess with that face, and that hair. But even if you didn’t have a nice face, and even if you had absolutely no hair because of some bizarre medical reason, I’d still adore you.

7. In the Mood for Love
Feelings can creep up just like that. I thought I was in control.

8. Brokeback Mountain
I wish I knew how to quit you.
