New Mexico Highlands University Description: New Mexico Highlands University is a four-year, public university in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Sante Fe is about an hour to the west. The university opened in 1898 and now supports roughly 4,000 students with a 14 to 1 student / faculty ratio. NMHU offers a range of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs across the School of Education, School of Social Work, School of Business, Media, and Technology, and College of Arts and Sciences. The university also has a selective honors program for high-achieving students, as well as classes that can be taken online. Students have no trouble staying busy outside of the classroom, for NMHU has a long list of student clubs and organizations including the NMHU Zoo Crew (a DJ club), a Twirling Club, and the NMHU Disc Golf Club. The university also offers numerous intramural sports. On the intercollegiate front, the NMHU Cowboys and Cowgirls compete in the NCAA Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) with sports including men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, and rodeo.
