P1320 Nissan Misfire Service Bulletin and Your Warranty

Engine warranties and dealer issues are nothing new to car ownership, but when this owner's Nissan Maxima started flashing warning lights after an engine misfire, she decided to look into whether her problem should be covered by warranty. Here was her issue:

 

My car questions deals with a misfire on a cylinder. I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE sedan 3.0 liter V-6. It is an automatic and has 37,953 miles on it. I took my car to the dealership yesterday because my "Service Engine Soon" light was on. I was informed, after a $100.00 diagnostic test, that the error code was P1320, the ignition primary code. They tested the system and found a slight misfire on cylinder #4.

 

They tested the coils and couldn't pinpoint which coil is faulty. They had two suggestions: 1) wait until one fails and replace at that time, or 2) replace all six coils for $675.00 What do I do? If the one coil fails, would this be expensive?

I called Nissan North America because I noticed I do have a 5-year or 60,000 mile warranty on transmission, engine, etc. However the woman couldn't tell me exactly what was covered. Do you think that this problem would be covered under a warranty? The serviceman never mentioned the warranty at all, and this bothers me. Please let me know.

Nissan includes a warranty book with the Owners Manual. That will explain what is covered and not covered. However, I do believe the ignition coils would be covered.

As for pinpointing which ignition coil is bad, if the misfire is on #4, logically it would be coil #4 that has a problem. The other five coils have nothing to do with #4. For the life of me, I don't understand how a Nissan Technician could not know this.

There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) out on this issue. I would suggest having your dealer look it up and perform the repair procedure. Here is is below:

SERVICE INFORMATION:
If an applied vehicle exhibits one or both of the below symptoms:

  • MIL "ON" with DTC P1320 stored in the ECM Intermittent spark knock (detonation)

The cause may be one or more of the ignition coils.

Refer to the Service Procedure below to resolve the incident, if it should occur.

The following Service Procedure is Recommended

Determine if one or both of the symptoms listed above exists and perform the appropriate procedure(s) listed below.

Procedure For MIL "ON" With DTC P1320 Symptom

 

  1. Check Self Diagnosis Results (using CONSULT-II) to confirm DTC P1320 (Ignition Signal Primary) is stored in the ECM. NOTE :Single or multiple cylinder misfire codes (P0300 - P0306) may be stored in the ECM with DTC P1320.

  2. Check the ECCS wiring harness for a broken or damaged wire.

    1. If the ECCS harness has a broken or damaged wire that is causing the symptom(s) noted above, repair the harness and verify the incident is resolved.

    2. If the ECCS harness does not have a broken or damaged wire and is NOT causing the symptom(s) listed above, proceed with step 3 below.

  3. Replace ignition coil(s) with the one(s) listed in the Parts Information table, and verify the incident is resolved.

Fuel

  1. Verify the type of gasoline used in the vehicle.

    1. If unleaded regular (non-premium) gasoline is used, advise the customer to use unleaded premium gasoline to eliminate the spark knock (detonation).

    2. If unleaded premium gasoline is used and no other source for the symptom is found, proceed with step 3 below.

     

    You can print this out and take it with you. And don't be afraid to say "And I DO expect this to be covered under the warranty!"
