According to the McDonald's Corporation website (as of January 2015), McDonald's has, "retailers in more than 100 countries, with more than 36,000 restaurants serving approximately 69 million people every day." In 2007 there were 30,000 restaurants in 119 countries, so in the intervening years, 19 McDonald's countries have been lost.

Inflated Numbers?

Wikipedia maintains a listing of countries where McDonald's exists and the list numbers (as of this writing in January 2015) 118 "countries" but many of those "countries" are not independent countries at all.

Therefore, McDonald's claim of restaurants existing in 100 countries may be inflated by non-independent countries.

What Fast-Food Chain Is the Largest?

McDonald's is a huge and mighty fast-food chain but is it the largest? No, Subway is the largest, with 43,496 stores in 109 countries. Again, many of these "countries" are not independent and are merely territories.
