Discussion of Oberlin's Admissions Standards:

Fewer than one in three applicants to Oberlin College will receive an acceptance letter, and the great majority of students who get in have grades and standardized test scores that are significantly above average. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. Most successful applicants had high school averages of "A-" or higher, combined SAT scores of 1300 or higher (RW+M), and ACT composite scores of 28 or better. The distribution of data points on the graph suggests that Oberlin places more value on grades than it does on test scores.

Note that there are quite a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) mixed in with the green and blue in all but the very upper right corner of the graph. Many students with grades and test scores that were on target for Oberlin College did not win admission. On the flip side, note that a few students were accepted with standardized test scores that are a bit below the norm. This is because Oberlin's admissions process is based on much more than numbers. The college uses the Common Application and has a holistic admissions process. Oberlin's admissions officers will want to see that you have taken rigorous high school courses, not courses that get you an easy "A." Also, they will be looking for a winning essay, interesting extracurricular activities, an engaging short answer, and strong letters of recommendation. Another important part of the Oberlin application is the supplemental essay, a piece of writing you can use to demonstrate your interest. Finally, you can use two optional items to strengthen your application further: SAT Subject Test scores and an optional interview.
