Discussion of Occidental's Admissions Standards:

Occidental College is a selective liberal arts college that accepts less than half of all applicants. To get in, you'll need strong standardized test scores and grades. In the graph above, you can see that the majority of successful applicants had high school grades in the "A" range, combined SAT scores of 1250 or higher, and ACT composite scores of 26 or better. The higher those grades and test scores, the better your chances are of receiving an acceptance letter from Occidental.

Note that there are many red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) mixed in with the green and blue in all but the uppermost right corner of the graph. Even if you have grades and test scores that are on target for Occidental College, you are not guaranteed admission. On the flip side, note that some students were accepted with test scores and grades a bit below the norm. This is because Occidental's admissions process is qualitative as well as quantitative. The college uses The Common Application and has holistic admissions. The admissions folks take into consideration the rigor of your high school courses, your application essay, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation. Also, Occidental has a supplement to the Common Application -- make sure your short essays in the supplement show off your personality and demonstrate your interest in Occidental.
