Lennie, who fails to comprehend his own strength, grips Curley's wife too hard as he strokes her hair. As a result, he accidentally breaks her neck and kills her.

Before shooting Lennie, George tells Lennie all about the farm they'd like to own, just like he has done throughout the entire book.
