Shawnee has a population of around 30,000 and is just east of Oklahoma City. The school opened in 1911, after the State Baptist Convention made plans for a Baptist college in Shawnee. After a few years of holding classes in a church basement and nearby convention hall, the school moved to its own campus. OBU offers a variety of majors (from five different schools within the university) for students to choose from--some of the most popular choices include Education, Nursing, Anthropology, Psychology, and Biblical/Theological Studies. Students can also earn a Master's degree--either in Business or in Nursing. Undergraduate students, who qualify, can enroll in the school's Honors Program. Through this program, students take Honors courses (in Bible studies, English, and other core areas) throughout their four years. Students also complete two out of three capstone projects--chosen from: study abroad, a senior thesis, and/or a service practicum. On the athletic front, the OBU Bison compete in the NCAA Division II Great American Conference. Popular sports include track and field, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, and tennis.
