1994 Olympic Figure Skating Champion:

Oksana Baiul won the women's event in the 1994 Winter Olympics.

Young Gold Medal Winner:

Oksana was only sixteen years old when she won Olympic gold. She won the world figure skating championships when she was only fifteen years old.

Oksana Baiul the Orphan:

At age two, Oksana Baiul's parents separated and she never did reconnect with her father. She was raised by her grandparents and mother, but both her grandparents died by the time she was ten.

Then, her mother died when she was thirteen.

Oksana then lived with her coach, Stanislav Koretek, and his family. Koretek moved to Canada suddenly. For awhile, Oksana was alone.

She then moved in with coach Galina Zmievskaya in Odessa. She was trained by Zmievskaya from that point on.

Oksana Baiul was born on November 16, 1977 in the Ukraine.

How Oksana Began Ice Skating:

At the age of four, Oksana was given a pair of ice skates for her birthday. She showed talent at an early age and began competing at ice skating events at age seven.

After the 1994 Olympics:

Oksana Baiul began skating professionally shortly after the 1994 Winter Olympics. Barbara Walters named her "One of the 10 Most Fascinating Personalities of 1994." She performed in "Champions on Ice" and other professional shows. She also was young Clara in "Nutcracker on Ice."

Drunk Driving Accident in 1997:

In 1997, due to drunk driving, Oksana Baiul was in a car accident.

She entered an alcohol rehab program in 1998. She then returned to professional skating.
