Find online databases and records for researching ancestors in British India, the territories of India under the tenancy or sovereignty of the East India Company or British Crown between 1612 and 1947. Among these were the provinces of Bengal, Bombay, Burma, Madras, Punjab, Assam and United Provinces, encompassing portions of present-day India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

A free index to selected India births and baptisms online from FamilySearch. Only a few localities are included and the time period varies by locality. The greatest number of India birth and baptism records in this collection are from Bengal, Bombay and Madras.

India Office Family History Search

This free, searchable database from the British India Office includes 300,000 baptisms, marriages, deaths and burials in the India Office Records, primarily relating to British and European people in India c. 1600-1949. There is also information on a remote search service for Ecclesiastical Records not found online for researchers who cannot visit in person.

British India - Indexes

A variety of online, searchable lists and indexes, the largest of which is an index of Cadet papers held at in OIC in London, with approximately 15000 names of officer cadets that joined the EIC Madras army from 1789 until 1859.
