With the development of digital technology and invention of the iPad and other tablets, the 21st century has brought even greater versatility to the painting process. There are many great apps to choose from for painting and drawing on your iPad, as highlighted on the following website:

24 best iPad art apps for painting and sketching

With so many apps to choose from, it can be hard to decide which to choose and where to start.

Here are three I’ve used that I recommend, ranging from more intuitive, for all artists, to more sophisticated, for the professional digital artist.

Art Set

Art Set is a wonderful app for all artists, particularly those who are not necessarily tech savvy. The app provides a realistic representation of the medium and tool you are using, making it more intuitive for the practicing artist.  According to the Description on iTunes, “This stunningly beautiful app is like having a virtual art set right inside your iPad.  Paint and draw via the photo realistic interface with tools that look and feel like the real thing.”  The different media are designed to produce natural-looking effects.  The basic edition is $1.99.  For more features and tools you can upgrade to Art Set – Pro Edition for $6.99.

Brushes Redux

Brushes Redux is free, great for those artists who have some familiarity with creating digital art or are willing to spend just a little time learning, and has a playback feature that is unique, fun, and educational.

David Hockney, the renown English artist,  uses this app when painting on his iPad. See my fuller description of this app at Painting with Your iPad: Brushes 3.

Sketchbook Pro

Sketchbook Pro is a sophisticated app for those with significant digital art experience, or time to learn the features. According to the Description in iTunes, “Autodesk SketchBook® Pro for iPad is a professional-grade paint and drawing application.

Using the same paint engine as its desktop counterpart, SketchBook Pro delivers a complete set of sketching & painting tools through a streamlined and intuitive user interface designed exclusively for the iPad experience.”

Sketchbook Pro comes with many features, including over a 100 different brushes to choose from, multiple layers to work with, and also a time-lapse recording of each mark made that can be saved to your Photo library. As in Brushes 3, I particularly like this feature.  This app gives you professional level features and high quality images for just $4.99.

Pick an app and try it out.  You'll find it to be a great new tool for painting!
