It is often used as the reflexive verb peinarse, which is when the action returns to the subject of the verb. Peinarse is a regular -ar reflexive verb, similar to cepillarse, ducharse, and afeitarse. In the tables below you can find the conjugations for peinarse in the indicative mood (present, past, future and conditional), the subjunctive mood (present and past), the imperative mood, and other verb forms. Using Peinar and Peinarse in Spanish When used non-reflexively, the verb peinar is a transitive verb that means to comb or style someone's hair. For example, Ella peina a la niña (She combs the girl's hair.) When used as the reflexive verb peinarse, it means that the person combs their own hair. Notice that peinarse already means to comb or style hair, so the word for hair (pelo or cabello) does not need to be mentioned. For example, La niña se peina por la mañana (The girl combs/styles her hair in the morning). Also, although the noun peine means comb, the meaning of the verb peinarse is extended to mean not only to comb one's hair but to brush it or style it. Peinarse Present Indicative Since peinarse is a reflexive verb, be sure to add the reflexive pronoun to the conjugation. Yo me peino I comb my hair Yo me peino por la mañana. Tú te peinas You comb your hair Tú te peinas todas las noches. Usted/él/ella se peina You/he/she combs your/his/her hair Ella se peina frente al espejo. Nosotros nos peinamos We comb our hair Nosotros nos peinamos muy rápido. Vosotros os peináis You comb your hair Vosotros os peináis antes de salir. Ustedes/ellos/ellas se peinan You/they comb your/their hair Ellas se peinan de moño. Peinarse Preterite Indicative There are two past tenses in Spanish. The preterite is similar to the English simple past, and it is used to talk about actions completed in the past. Yo me peiné I combed my hair Yo me peiné por la mañana. Tú te peinaste You combed your hair Tú te peinaste todas las noches. Usted/él/ella se peinó You/he/she combed your/his/her hair Ella se peinó frente al espejo. Nosotros nos peinamos We combed our hair Nosotros nos peinamos muy rápido. Vosotros os peinasteis You combed your hair Vosotros os peinasteis antes de salir. Ustedes/ellos/ellas se peinaron You/they combed your/their hair Ellas se peinaron de moño. Peinarse Imperfect Indicative The imperfect tense is used to talk about repeated or ongoing actions in the past. It can be translated as "was combing" or "used to comb." Yo me peinaba I used to comb my hair Yo me peinaba por la mañana. Tú te peinabas You used to comb your hair Tú te peinabas todas las noches. Usted/él/ella se peinaba You/he/she used to comb your/his/her hair Ella se peinaba frente al espejo. Nosotros nos peinábamos We used to comb our hair Nosotros nos peinábamos muy rápido. Vosotros os peinabais You used to comb your hair Vosotros os peinabais antes de salir. Ustedes/ellos/ellas se peinaban You/they used to comb your/their hair Ellas se peinaban de moño. Peinarse Future Indicative Yo me peinaré I will comb my hair Yo me peinaré por la mañana. Tú te peinarás You will comb your hair Tú te peinarás todas las noches. Usted/él/ella se peinará You/he/she will comb your/his/her hair Ella se peinará frente al espejo. Nosotros nos peinaremos We will comb our hair Nosotros nos peinaremos muy rápido. Vosotros os peinaréis You will comb your hair Vosotros os peinaréis antes de salir. Ustedes/ellos/ellas se peinarán You/they will comb your/their hair Ellas se peinarán de moño. Peinarse Periphrastic Future Indicative The periphrastic future tense is formed with the verb ir (to go), the preposition a, and the infinitive of the verb. In this verb tense you should place the reflexive pronoun before the conjugated verb ir. Yo me voy a peinar I am going to comb my hair Yo me voy a peinar por la mañana. Tú te vas a peinar You are going to comb your hair Tú te vas a peinar todas las noches. Usted/él/ella se va a peinar You/he/she is going to comb your/his/her hair Ella se va a peinar frente al espejo. Nosotros nos vamos a peinar We are going to comb our hair Nosotros nos vamos a peinar muy rápido. Vosotros os vais a peinar You are going to comb your hair Vosotros os vais a peinar antes de salir. Peinarse Present Progressive/Gerund Form To conjugate the present progressive and other progressive verb forms, you need the present participle, which for -ar verbs is formed with the ending -ando. In the progressive tenses, you should place the reflexive pronoun before the conjugated auxiliary verb (estar). Present Progressive of Peinarse: se está peinando She is combing her hair -> Ella se está peinando frente al espejo. Peinarse Past Participle The past participle is used to conjugate compound tenses such as the present perfect. The past participle for -ar verbs is formed with the ending -ado. In compound tenses you should place the reflexive pronoun before the conjugated auxiliary verb (haber). Present Perfect of Peinarse: se ha peinado She has combed her hair -> Ella se ha peinado frente al espejo. Peinarse Present Subjunctive Que yo me peine That I comb my hair Esteban quiere que yo me peine por la mañana. Que tú te peines That you comb your hair Mamá quiere que tú te peines todas las noches.
