The PGA Championship tournament has been held every year since its inception in 1916, becoming one of the PGA Tour's major championships, but this tournament changed its scoring format halfway through its history: In its early years, this major was match play, but in the 1950s, it switched to stroke play.

Either way the organizers scored it, the winners of the PGA Championship were known throughout the world as the best golfers in the game, with a few standing out among them for winning multiple titles at this major championship matchup.

The players with the single most victories with five PGA Championship wins each are Walter Hagen (1921, 1924, 1925, 1926 and 1927) and Jack Nicklaus (1963, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1980) while Tiger Woods won four (1999, 2000, 2006, 2007) and both Gene Sarazen (1922, 1923, 1933) and Sam Snead (1942, 1949, 1951) took home three — all of Nicklaus' and Woods' wins came in the stroke-play era; all the wins by Hagen, Sarazen and Snead were in the match-play era.

In addition, 14 others golfers have won the PGA Championship twice: Jim Barnes, Leo Diegel, Raymond Floyd, Ben Hogan, Rory McIlroy, Byron Nelson, Larry Nelson, Gary Player, Nick Price, Paul Runyan, Denny Shute, Vijay Singh, Dave Stockton and Lee Trevino.
