Discussion of Portland State University's Admissions Standards:

Located right in downtown Portland, Portland State University could be an excellent choice for students looking for a huge range of academic options in an urban environment. The university is somewhat selective, and roughly a third of all applicants will not be admitted. That said, the admissions bar is not all that high. In the graph above, the green and blue dots represent applicants who had successful applications. The great majority had a high school GPA of 3.0 (a "B") or better, a combined SAT score (RW+M) of 950 or higher, and an ACT composite score of 18 or higher. You can see that a significant number of admitted students had grades up in the "A" range (and if you have strong grades, be sure to check out the Urban Honors College so that you can work with other high achieving students).

Admission to Portland State University is, for the most part, not holistic. In other words, admissions decisions are based mostly on numerical measures such as GPA and standardized test scores. Extracurricular involvement, essays, and letters of recommendation are not part of the application. According to the school's minimum admission requirements, applicants should have a GPA of at least a 3.0 in all graded subject areas. If an applicant's GPA is not a 3.0, a strong performance on the ACT or SAT can make up for the shortfall. For example, a student with a 2.70 high school GPA can still be admitted if he or she has a 1290 SAT (RW+M) or a 29 ACT composite score.

Students applying to the Urban Honors College will need to meet higher academic standards and answer three essay questions. For the Fall of 2016, University Honors College students needed to have a 3.5 high school GPA, a 1200 on the SAT (critical reading + math), or a 26 composite ACT score.
