With Microsoft PowerPoint, it is possible to animate text to appear on the slide either one word or one letter at a time. The animation gives a presentation professional polish and captures the attention of the audience—as long as you don't overdo it.

Follow the steps given here for your particular version of PowerPoint to animate a line of text.

Animate Text in PowerPoint 2016 and other Recent Versions

To animate a line of text to enter a slide one word or one letter at a time is easy in recent versions of PowerPoint.

  1. Type a line of text in a PowerPoint document.
  2. Select the text box by clicking on it.
  3. Select the Animations tab on the ribbon and choose Appear.
  4. Click on Animation Pane to open it at the right side of the screen
  5. Click on Text Animations at the bottom of the Animation Pane.
  6. In the drop-down menu next to Animate text, select By Word or By Letter.
  7. Preview the effect by clicking Preview.

Animate Text in PowerPoint 2007

To animate text in PowerPoint 2007, you start by selecting the border of the text box. If you click inside the text box, PowerPoint expects you to edit the text, which is not what you will be doing.

  1. Click the Animations tab of the ribbon.
  2. Select Custom Animation.
  3. In the Custom Animation task pane on the right of the screen, choose Add Effect > Entrance > Appear.
  4. In the Custom Animation task pane, click the drop-down arrow beside the new animation. Select Effect Options.
  1. In the dialog box that appears, the Effect tab should be selected. Click the drop-down arrow beside Animate text. Choose either By word or By letter to cause the text to appear on the slide either by individual words or by individual letters.
  2. Click OK.

Note:  You may want to add a sound in this same dialog box to accompany the text animation, such as Typewriter if you are choosing the By letter option.
