When you're facing temptation, whatever it is that's enticing you may seem irresistible at the time, but you know you'll regret it later. This is the time to turn to God for help in overcoming the temptation to sin.

Resisting the urge to sin is difficult on our own, but when we bring God into the picture, walking away from what we know isn't good for us becomes easier. Here is an original simple prayer you can say when you're faced with temptation:

A Prayer for Facing Temptation

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for all the wonderful things you have put in my life. Family, friends, a roof over my head, and food on my table. Thank you for the blessings you give me every day. I am so grateful for all that you provide.

You know I try hard, Lord, not to stumble in my walk with you. Yet I find myself facing temptations—desires that lead me away from you. Sometimes the temptations seem too strong for me. The desires seem too powerful to resist.

Lord, please help me know the right way to turn. Help me to stay awake spiritually so that I see the way of escape you have promised to give me. I know what your Word says about facing temptation. Even still, it would be so easy for me to give in and stumble yet again. But today I ask for your strength. Your guidance.

I cannot walk alone, Lord. I cannot make it without you. I know you are here to take my hand when I need you most.

I know you are here to carry me when I cannot go on alone. I ask for that strength now, Lord. I ask for your will and your way.

Lord, you overcame Satan's temptations. You understand my struggle. So I ask for the strength you had when facing Satan's attacks in the wilderness. Don't let me be dragged away by my own desires.

Let my heart obey your word.

Thank you, Lord, for being here for me when I am in my hour of need.

In your holy name, the name of Jesus, I pray.

Amen.

In these three Gospel verses, Jesus spoke to his disciples about temptation in the garden of Gethsemane on Good Friday:

  • Mark 14:38 "Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak." (NLT)
  • Luke 22:40  "There he told them, 'Pray that you will not give in to temptation.'” (NLT)

Paul writes to the Christian communities in Corinth and Galatia about temptation in these Epistles:

  • 1 Corinthians 10:13 "But remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can't stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it."  (NLT)
  • Galatians 5:17 "The Spirit and your desires are enemies of each other. They are always fighting each other and keeping you from doing what you feel you should." (CEV)

James wrote to Jewish Christians in his Epistle:

    • James 1:13 " When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me.' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed." (NIV)
