Question: How should I prepare for dance team tryouts?

I want to try out for the dance team, but I don't know where to start. How can I prepare for tryouts? Is there anything I can do to improve my chances of making the dance team?

Answer: The best way to prepare for dance team tryouts is to take freshen up your dance skills. If you want to be on a dance team, you're probably familiar with dancing. You will just need to practice a little and work on skills that may be challenging for you.

Of course, if you've never taken dance classes before, you'll want to try to enroll in a beginner ballet, jazz or hip-hop class a few months before the tryout date.

Take a Dance Class

Even if you've taken dance classes in the past, it's a good idea to take a few classes a few months   before tryouts to sharpen your skills. By enrolling in a couple of dance classes, you will be able to see any weaknesses you may have. It's also a good idea to see where you are technically, compared to the rest of the dancers in the class.

One of the most beneficial dance classes to take is ballet. Ballet serves as a backbone for many other styles of dance, as many other dance genres are based on ballet. Ballet is based on techniques that have been developed over centuries. Another good class to enroll in is jazz. Jazz is a fun dance style that relies heavily on originality and improvisation. Many jazz dancers mix different styles into their dancing, incorporating their own expression.

Jazz dancing often uses bold, dramatic body movements, including body isolations and contractions.

If you want to try a class that's a little in between ballet and jazz, try enrolling in a modern dance class. Modern dance is a dance style that rejects many of the strict rules of classical ballet, focusing instead on the expression of inner feelings.

Modern dance was created as a rebellion against classical ballet, emphasizing creativity in choreography and performance.

Focus on Flexibility and Strength

If you are flexible, you will have a big advantage compared to those who aren't. Flexibility refers to the ability of the joints to move through a full range of motion. Having flexibility in your muscles allows for more movement around the joints.  Some dance teams require members to have their splits, so make sure you stretch each day. You'll also need a lot of strength and stamina to be a dance team member. Focus on building muscles in your back and stomach, and condition yourself by raising your heart rate each day by exercising.

Having a balance of strength and flexibility will definitely help you to stand out in a dance team tryout. Use the time before tryouts to focus on these two skills.
