Chimpanzees are community-oriented and tend to cooperate well with other members within their families. Gender does play a role in the chimpanzee community. Males are dominant over the females. The females are very nurturing and spend the majority of their time with their young. Anyone with a chimpanzee totem needs to consider his or her role within his family. What talents or services do you offer to your family that is beneficial to the whole?

The dominant male will attempt to restrict other males from mating with certain females. Yet, the female chimpanzees' sexually could be described as promiscuous, willing to mate with multiple partners when opportunity arises. Tendencies toward promiscuity, dominance, or jealousy may be prominent for a person with chimpanzee as a totem.

Chimpanzees are good communicators using hand gestures, vocalizing, and making facial expressions. Ask yourself if you are expressing yourself in all ways possible? Chipmanzees are also extremely adaptable, making and using tools to assist them in performing tasks. When chimpanzee totem appears it may be trying to show you an easier way to do something, or offering you a better tool.

A chimpanzee can switch from being passive to aggressive in a matter of seconds if provoked, or even for no apparent reason. A chimpanzee totem showing a hostile behavior could be a reflection of your own personality or tendencies. Totems are our teachers, a frantic or angry chimp needs to calm down. Ask yourself if you need to calm your energies and learn not to jump into situations unless you have your emotions in check.

The monkey is represented differently by various cultures. Some cultures consider monkeys to be devilish, whereas other cultures cherish monkeys for their playfulness and imagination.

Everyone has heard the saying See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil that is associated with three monkeys covering their eyes, ears, and mouth. These proverbial monkeys remind us not to listen to or spread rumors, and also not to be so quick to judge the things we see, because things are not always how they seem on the surface. These are good lessons.

Monkey totem teaches us not to rely on the physical senses (sight, sound, and speech) for spiritual truth but to develop our sixth sense of knowing.

Orangutan are tree-dwellers and are experts at swinging from one tree to another in their rain forest habitat. Their feet are very similar to their hands which gives them "an extra pair" to use for climbing.

The orangutan baby is dependent on its mother for the first six to eight years of its life, and is likely to stay near her into its teen years. As a totem orangutans represent mother-child relationships. If an orangutan shows up as a totem for you it may be time to evaluate your relationship with your mother. Have you given her the credit she deserves for the care she gave you as a child? Or, is it time for you to cut the apron strings and branch out into a life of your own?

Because of its unique orange coloring the orangutan spirit totem shares spiritual lessons associated with the sacral chakra which include creativity, manifestation. honoring relationships, and learning to "let go"

Adult male orangutans are loners. Study and observation of orangutans in the wild has shown that orangutans are able to think and figure things out. Orangutan characteristics are closely related to human life and has much to teach humans about survival in difficult times. If the orangutan is your totem then the protection of rain forests would e a beneficial cause to support.
