"Pulp Fiction," directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Samuel L. Jackson, isn't for everyone. The movie, released in 1994, is brutal, stylized, and quirky. It comprises several overlapping stories that jump around in time while recounting the adventures and misadventures of two philosophical hit men, a brutal gangster, his sexy, flirtatious wife, and a boxer looking for a way out.

"Pulp Fiction" won the Academy Award for best original screenplay and was nominated for six others. Its sensibilities range from humor to gore, from cruelty to sweetness, and the razor-sharp dialogue is loaded with wit. The Oscar attests to the quality of the script, and the dialogue is memorable.

These quotes communicate the softer side of some very bad people:

Jules (Samuel L. Jackson)

"If my answers frighten you then you should cease asking scary questions."

"Hamburgers! The cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast."

"Nobody's gonna hurt anybody. We're gonna be like three little Fonzies here. And what's Fonzie like? Come on, Yolanda, what's Fonzie like?"

"I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way."

Vincent (John Travolta)

"Jules, did you ever hear the philosophy that once a man admits that he's wrong that he is immediately forgiven for all wrongdoings?"

"And you know what they call a... a... a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris? ... They call it a Royale with cheese."

"Well, I didn't mean to do it, it was an accident!" (after shooting a man in the face)

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go home and have a heart attack."

Mia (Uma Thurman)

"I do believe Marsellus Wallace, my husband, your boss, told you to take me out and do whatever I wanted.

Now I wanna dance, I wanna win. I want that trophy, so dance good."

"I'll be there in two shakes of a lamb's tail."

"Three tomatoes are walking down the street -- a poppa tomato, a momma tomato, and a little baby tomato. Baby tomato starts lagging behind. Poppa tomato gets angry, goes over to the baby tomato, and squishes him... and says, 'Catch up.' "

"You can get a steak here, daddy-o. Don't be a (draws a square in the air with her fingers)."

Pumpkin (Tim Roth)

"Everyone be cool -- this is a robbery! I am going to come around and collect your wallets."

"I don't know... there probably never was a 'little girl' in the first place. The point of the story isn't the little girl; the point of the story is: they robbed a bank with a telephone."

"Nobody ever robs restaurants. Bars, liquor stores, gas stations... you get your head blown off sticking up one of them. Restaurants, on the other hand, you catch with their pants down. They're not expecting to get robbed. Not as expectant anyway."

"Yeah, well the days of me forgetting are over, and the days of me remembering have just begun."
