The French word rater, pronounced "ra tay," can have several meanings, including to misfire, miss, fail, bungle, miscarry, or to mess up.

Fais attention! Le fusil peut rater. - Be careful! The rifle could misfire.

Elle a raté le train pour Paris. - She missed the train to Paris.

Le project a raté parce que Paul n'y a pas contribué. - The project failed because Paul didn't contribute to it.



Tu as raté ta vie! - You've messed up your life!
