Reebok Spartan Race Explained

The Sprint, Super, Beast and Ultra Beast Explained

Reebok Spartan Race is one of the top obstacles races in OCR. Reebok Spartan Race was the first to truly operate as a sport in a sea of mud runs. The company began in 2010, all of the races that year were the same 5K+ distance. In 2011, Reebok Spartan Race introduced the "Super" distance offering a 7-9 mile course in addition to the original "Sprint" distance as well as the "Beast" a half marathon distance obstacle race. Together the three comprise the Spartan Trifecta.

For the ultimate challenge the Ultra Beast awaits those who are up for the challenge.

Spartan Race Ultra Beast

The Ultra Beast lies outside the trifecta and is the most challenging race in the series. In the United States it takes place in Killington, Vermont each year the day after the world championships. Australia has also had it's own Ultra Beast. It is a stand alone event.

Each year it is advertised as a marathon distance race, however each year it has been closer to a 50K or 31 mile race. Participants not only traverse a challenging course but also face time cut-offs and racers are offered limited aid and must provide their own race nutrition. It is not a race for the untrained and should only be considered if the participant has a solid racing background behind them.

Participants who finish the Ultra Beast receive a special Ultra Beast medal that is traditionally an oversized glow-in-the-dark medal with special ribbon.  More »

Spartan Race Death Race

The Spartan Death Race  is not as much a race as it is an Extreme Endurance Event. It is run by Peak Races the precursor for Reebok Spartan Race and considered one of the toughest endurance challenges in the world. At this event participants endure a string of physical and mental challenges. Participants are not told when the exact race time starts nor when it ends. The finish rate for this event is normally less than 25%.

It is truly a stand alone event and is not like any of the above mentioned races. Participants who finish the Death Race receive a plastic skull and bragging rights.  More »
