Discussion of Reed's Admissions Standards:

Reed College is a highly selective liberal arts college that accepts roughly a third of all applicants. To get in, you'll need high school grades and standardized test scores that are significantly above average. In the scattergram above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that the majority of successful applicants had high school GPAs in the "A" range, combined SAT scores of 1300 or higher, and ACT composite scores of 28 or better. A 4.0 GPA is not unusual for a Reed applicant.

Good grades and test scores alone, however, will not get you admitted to Reed. You'll notice quite a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) interspersed with the green and blue in all but the uppermost right corner of the graph. Many applicants had grades and test scores that were on target for Reed College yet were not admitted. Note that the opposite is also true -- some students were accepted with test scores and grades a little bit below the norm. This is because Reed's admissions process is based on more than numbers. The college uses the Common Application and has holistic admissions. The college will be looking at the rigor of your high school courses, not just your grades. Also, they will be looking for a winning essay, interesting extracurricular activities, an engaging short answer, and strong letters of recommendation. You can further strengthen your applications by writing a convincing supplemental essay that answers the question, "Why Reed?" Finally, participating in an optional interview is a good way for you to demonstrate your interest.
