Is There An NHL 24/7: Road To The Winter Classic For 2016?

It's a beautiful time of the year for hockey fans...

Hockey fans may be able to recall that last year HBO didn't air it's 24/7 series for the NHL's annual Bridgestone Winter Classic. It was the first time in three seasons (excluding 2012-2013 half season) that the league and HBO decided to no longer team up and give fans weeks of prior inside access to hockey's beloved New Year's Day game.

Instead, the NHL partnered up with the network EPIX in 2014-2015 to produce and air the same concept.

The NHL and EPIX then officially renamed the series -- Road To The NHL Winter Classic.

Last year's four-episode series featured the Chicago Blackhawks and the Washington Capitals, where the final episode centered around the outdoor game played at Nationals Park in Washington, DC.

So, will there be a fifth installment for the NHL's 'Road To The Winter Classic' in 2015-2016?

Yes.

The NHL and EPIX have reunited again, and the first episode airs on December 16 at 10:00pm (EST).

This season takes viewers behind close doors with the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins. The two Original Six franchises will meet outdoors in Massachusetts, at Gillette Stadium (home of the New England Patriots) on January 1 at 1:00pm (EST).

What Has Been The Best NHL Winter Classic?

If you're asking why the NHL and HBO moved on from each other -- it was for a couple of concerns. Money, like anything else, was the primary reason.

While the first season was a joint contribution financially  -- the last two seasons were supported by the NHL's pockets.

Also, the final 24/7 season which featured the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings was no where near as good as the first two seasons. So, regardless, it was probably best and time for a change.

10 Biggest Surprises In The NHL This Season

Not only is this year's NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic one of the more highly anticipated outdoor games, but so is the EPIX series. Fans will get a closer look at one of the most prestige professional sports franchises in the Canadiens -- with entertaining players such as defenseman P.K. Subban and 2015 MVP Carey Price.

The Bruins will be just as intriguing to watch, where more will learned about Slovakian native and six-foot-nine defenseman Zdeno Chara; plus one of hockey's most respected players, center Patrice Bergeron.

Get ready for a grudge match between these two rivals -- there's more than just bragging rights on the line.
