Discussion of RPI's Admissions Standards:

You're going to need grades and standardized test scores that are well above average to get into RPI, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. This technology-focused university accepts well under half of all applicants. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that the majority of admitted students had high school GPAs of "A-" or higher, combined SAT scores of 1250 or higher, and ACT composite scores of 26 or better. Many applicants had impressive 4.0 GPAs, and strong math scores are important.

Strong grades and test scores, however, are just one part of a successful RPI application. You'll notice quite a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) interspersed with the green and blue, especially in the middle of the graph. Quite a few applicants had grades and test scores that were on target for RPI yet were not admitted. The opposite is also true -- a few students were accepted with test scores and grades below the norm. This is because RPI's admissions process is based on more than quantitative information. The institute uses the Common Application and has holistic admissions. The admissions folks at RPI will be looking at the rigor of your high school courses, not just your grades. They want to see that you have taken challenging college preparatory classes. Also, the school will be looking for a winning essay, interesting extracurricular activities, an engaging short answer, and strong letters of recommendation. You can further strengthen your application by providing well-crafted answers on the RPI supplement to the Common Application.

Note that RPI does not offer admissions interviews.
