Discussion of Sewanee's Admissions Standards:

Less than half of all applicants to Sewanee: The University of the South will get in. To be be admitted, an applicant should have above average grades and standardized test scores. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that the majority of students who got in had high school averages of B+ or higher, ACT composite scores of 24 or higher and combined SAT scores of 1150 or better (RW+M). Higher grades clearly increase your chances of receiving an acceptance letter.

Note that there are a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) hidden behind the green and blue in the middle of the graph, so not all students with competitive grades and test scores were admitted. Note also that some students were accepted with test scores and grades a little below the norm. This is because Sewanee has a holistic admissions process. Numerical data is just part of the equation. The admissions folks will also want to see a rigorous high school curriculum, meaningful extracurricular activities, a well-crafted personal statement, and glowing letters of recommendation. Sewanee also values an applicant's demonstrated interest.

Finally, keep in mind that low SAT or ACT scores need not be a barrier to admission. Sewanee is one of the country's more selective universities to have test-optional admissions. If you think your test scores could be a negative factor in the admissions decision, you can interview and submit a graded writing sample in place of test scores.
