The first annual Latin Grammy Awards was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California September 13, 2000.  Shakira performed live and she received two awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance with "Ojos Asi" and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance with "Octavo Dia."

2005 - Shakira Launches Fijacion Oral Vol. 1

In June 2005 Shakira released her sixth studio album Fijacion Oral Volume 1.  She worked with legendary producer Rick Rubin as executive producer on the Spanish language project.  It debuted at #4 on the US album chart which is thus far the highest debut ever by a Spanish language album. It became the bestselling Latin album of the decade in the US. The single "La Tortura" featuring Alejandro Sanz was the top selling Latin single of the year.

Shakira took part in the Live 8 series of charity concerts.  She performed in Paris, France. Live 8 took place on July 2, 2005.  The concerts publicized the plight of the world's poor.  It was timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Live Aid and to precede the 2005 G8 Conference.  As a result the G8 nations pledged to double their level of aid to poor nations by the year 2010.

Shakira performed live at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards held in Miami, Florida.  She sang her hit single "La Tortura" with Alejandro Sanz.  She received nominations for Best Female Video, Best Dance Video, and Viewer's Choice.  However, she did not take home any of the awards.

Shakira emerged victorious at the 2005 American Music Awards held November 22, 2005.  She won the Favorite Latin Artist award.  The following week she released her English language Oral Fixation Volume 2 album. It opened at #5 on the US album chart and ultimately sold eight million copies worldwide.  The reissued deluxe version of the album included Shakira's biggest worldwide pop hit single "Hips Don't Lie."

2006 - Shakira Wins Four Awards At the Latin Grammy Awards

Shakira was the big winner at the 2006 Latin Grammy Awards held November 2, 2006 in New York City. Her album Fijacion Oral Volume 1 was selected as Album of the Year.  The single "La Tortura" featuring Alejandro Sanz won Song Of the Year and Record Of the Year.  She also received the award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album Of the Year.  Shakira was the first woman ever to win Album Of the Year, Record Of the Year, and Song Of the Year in the same year at the Latin Grammy Awards.  Shakira also performed "La Tortura" live with Alejandro Sanz

Shakira took the stage at the 49th Grammy Awards February 11, 2007 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to perform her smash worldwide pop hit "Hips Don't Lie" with Wyclef Jean.  The pair were also nominated for the Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals but did not win.  "Hips Don't Lie" was essentially a reworking of Wyclef Jean's previous song "Dance Like This."  The song went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the pop singles chart in many other countries around the world.  The accompanying music video was nominated for six MTV Video Music Awards and took home the award for Best Choreography In a Video.  "Hips Don't Lie" was named the top pop radio airplay song of the year by the Billboard Music Awards.

Shakira performed "Give It To Me" live at the 2009 American Music Awards.  The song promoted a deluxe re-release of the She Wolf album and featured a rap from Lil Wayne.  The album included experiments in new genres for Shakira and sold less well than preceding albums.

Shakira has always embraced activism in her career.  In 2010 she visited Arizona to protest the controversial SB 1070 anti illegal immigration law.  She was moved to tears hearing stories from those impacted by the legislation.  Shakira protested the law on grounds that it violated civil rights.  The US Supreme Court later struck down significant portions of the law as unconstitutional.

2010 - Shakira Performs at FIFA World Cup

Shakira's single "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)" featuring South African band Freshlyground was adopted as the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.  It quickly became the bestselling of World Cup anthems.  She performed the song live at both the opening and closing ceremonies for the World Cup.  In between Shakira performed it live at England's Glastonbury Music Festival.

Shakira performed live at Madison Square Garden in New York as part of her well received The Sun Comes Out World Tour.  It kicked off just after release of the mostly Spanish language album Sale El Sol.  Many saw the new album as a return to form and it was a top 10 hit around the world.

As a UNICEF ambassador to advocate for children, Shakira appeared at the 2011 Israeli Presidential Conference.  The appearance caused some controversy with pro-Palestinian fans urging her to boycott Israel, and Israelis concerned about past anti-Israel comments attributed to Shakira.

2011 - Shakira Gets a Star On the Hollywood Walk Of Fame

At the tender age of 7, Shakira visited the legendary Hollywood Walk Of Fame with her family, and her mother said, "Shaki, one day you'll have your own star here."  The prediction came true in 2011.  She appeared at the dedication ceremony along with her parents Nidia and William.

In 2011 Shakira was named the Latin Recording Academy's Person Of the Year.  The night before the annual Latin Grammy Awards, she was honored at a gala event.  Shakira also won the Latin Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Album for Sale El Sol.

2013 - Shakira Appears As a Coach On Season 4 Of The Voice

For season 4 of the hit TV series The Voice, coaches Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green went on hiatus and were replaced by Shakira and Usher.  She received strong positive commendation for her appearance.  In the next season the original coaches returned, but Shakira and Usher came back for season 6 in early 2014.
