​Since you made it this far, there's a good chance you really like science. However, you might not have either the personality or skills needed to succeed as a chemist or enjoy it.

To be a chemist, you need to be comfortable with science and math, plus you'll have to communicate with others. Completing a college degree is a bare minimum requirement. Grad school is practically a must-do. After all this education, chemists don't make a whole lot of money.

Chemists excel at following directions because mistakes can be dangerous (explosion!). They work as members of a team. While a chemist has a supervisor and works regular hours, she is responsible, creative, and self-motivated.

If you're not meticulous, dislike working in a team, or don't handle failure well, you might do better in another career path. This is true of all sciences, not just chemistry. Fortunately, there are many career options you can pursue in chemistry besides becoming a chemist.

It looks like you'd make an excellent chemist (and be happy in the career).

To be a chemist, you need to go to college and probably graduate school. There's a lot of competition for jobs, so you need to be good at science, math, working on a computer, and communicating with others.

If money is your thing, you'd do better to be a chemical engineer. Scientists explore and innovate and often have a lot of freedom, but they don't tend to get paid a lot.

In chemistry (or any science), you need to be prepared to fail. You may have trouble in classes, experiments that don't work out, and projects that fall through. Don't give up! Looks for novel solutions to your problems and try again.

It's not easy to become a chemist, but the job is rewarding, plus you get to work regular hours and take vacations. Take a look at some of the career opportunities open to you.
