"Spider-Man (Music From and Inspired By)" was released on Tuesday, April 30, 2002, three days before the live action movie based on the classic Marvel Comics superhero hit U.S theaters. The soundtrack album was aimed at nu-metal and rock fans and featured a number of big name acts. The lead single, “What We’re All About” from Canadian rockers Sum 41 had a guitar solo from Slayer’s Kerry King. A new track, “Hero” was written and performed by Nickelback vocalist Chad Kroeger.

In another notable flourish, the album, which opens with the classic “Theme From Spider Man” from the animated TV show, closes with a cover of the same song by Aerosmith.

The album showcased new music from Alien Ant Farm, Slipknot's Corey Taylor, Pete Yorn, Black Lab, Bleu, and Greenwheel as well as Tom Morello's rock remix of Macy Gray's "My Nutmeg Phantasy.".

The PC compatible CD let fans log onto the Spider-Man website and unlock and view streaming versions of music videos for Sum 41's "What We're All About (The Original Version)" and "Hero" as well as behind-the-scenes footage from "Hero," the making of the Sum 41 clip, and exclusive footage from the shoots. The initial pressing of "Spider-Man (Music From and Inspired By)" came with a limited edition 3-D collector's card.

The album peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 and hit #1 on the Top Soundtracks chart.  Chad Kroeger’s Hero hit #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
