Established in 1882 as a seminary and school of commerce for young men, St. Ambrose is now a private, coeducational Roman Catholic university offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Among the school's 70+ majors, business and health fields are among the most popular. Academics are supported by an 10 to 1 student / faculty ratio and an average class size of 20. The school's main campus is located in a residential neighborhood of Davenport, Iowa, and St. Ambrose offers study abroad programs in over 30 countries.

The college has better residence halls than most, and student life is active with over 50 clubs and organizations. In athletics, the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees and Queen Bees compete in the NAIA Midwest Collegiate Conference for most sports. The college fields eleven men's and eleven women's sports.
