Which States Have Had No Women in Congress?

Which states have never had a woman representing that state in the United States Senate? Which states have never sent a woman to the United States House of Representatives? And which states have sent women to neither the Senate nor the House? Can you name those states?

On the following pages, you'll find the answers; write down your guesses and see if they match.

Women in the Senate

As of the beginning of the 113th Congress (2013), just under half the states (24) had never been represented by a woman in the United States Senate (shown in yellow on map):

  • Arizona
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Idaho
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

 In 2013, three other states added their first woman Senator (green on the map):

  • Hawaii
  • Massachusetts
  • Wisconsin

In 2015, two more states had their first woman Senator (not shown on map yet):

  • West Virginia
  • Iowa

No additional states were represented by women as of the 2017 elections.

Women in the House of Representatives

As of the beginning of the 115th Congress (2015), six states had never been represented in the United States House of Representatives by a woman (pink on the map):

  • Alaska
  • Delaware
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • North Dakota
  • Vermont

In 2017, Delaware elected a woman representative (map has not been updated to show that seat).

Which states have never been represented in the United States Senate or the House of Representatives by a woman?

Both Houses

As of the beginning of the 113th Congress (2013), four states had been represented in Congress by no woman in either the Senate or the House (purple on the map):

  • Delaware
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Vermont

Update: In 2015, a woman had been elected to the Senate from Iowa, leaving only three states never represented in Congress -- House or Senate -- by a woman:

  • Delaware
  • Mississippi
  • Vermont

And in 2017, Delaware elected a House Representative who is a woman, leaving only Vermont and Mississippi with no women ever representing them in Congress.
