Super Bowl Stadiums and Host Cities

Who's Hosted the Super Bowl?

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - FEBRUARY 02: The Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos play in the second half of Super Bowl XLVIII on February 2, 2014 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Seahawks won 43-8. The view is seen from a Customs and Border Protection helicopter operated by the U.S. Office of Air and Marine, which provided air support for law enforcement on the ground around the stadium.

A total of 23 different stadiums, five of which no longer exist, have hosted Super Bowls. The location is chosen by the NFL usually three to five years before the game. Cities place bids and a location is selected based on the stadium's amenities and the host city's ability to host. In recent years, the NFL tends to award the bid to the newest stadiums.

Criteria for Selection

There are several criteria required for a host city to bid for the Super Bowl.

The host stadium must be in a market with an NFL team, have a minimum of 70,000 seats, ample parking, an expected average temperature of 50 degrees on game day with a retractable roof or enclosed stadium, or a waiver given by the NFL. Other amenities considered are entertainment areas, supporting infrastructure, ample hotels and sufficient practice space for both teams.

No team has ever played the Super Bowl in its home stadium; although two teams have played in their home city. The San Francisco 49ers played Super Bowl XIX in Stanford Stadium instead of Candlestick Park, and the Los Angeles Rams played Super Bowl XIV in the Rose Bowl instead of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum; both stadiums were considered a better fit for the high-profile event.
