Discussion of Swarthmore's Admissions Standards:

Roughly 12% of students who apply to Swarthmore College get accepted, and it ranks as one of the most selective colleges in the country. To get in, you'll need strong grades and test scores. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that most had "A" averages, SAT scores (RW+M) above 1300, and ACT composite scores of 28 or higher. Keep in mind, however, that hidden beneath the blue and green on the graph is a lot of red and yellow. Some students with 4.0 GPAs and high test scores still got rejected from Swarthmore. The school is so selective that you should consider it a reach school even if you are on target for admission.

Like most selective liberal arts colleges, Swarthmore College has holistic admissions. Successful applicants need to have strengths that go beyond grades and test scores. Competitive applications should have a winning essay, strong letters of recommendation, and interesting extracurricular activities. Challenging high school courses are also essential. As a few of the data points above illustrate, true strengths in some of these areas can compensate for grades and test scores that are a little less than ideal. But be realistic -- no one with a "B" average and mediocre test scores got into Swarthmore. Swarthmore accepts the Common Application, Coalition Application, or Questbridge Application. All applicants will need to write a supplemental short answer essay on their reasons for wanting to attend Swarthmore.

Swarthmore College has an Early Decision admissions option, and applicants who are certain the college is their first choice should take advantage of this option. Applying early is an excellent way to demonstrate your interest, and acceptance rates are typically significantly higher for the Early Decision applicant pool than for the regular admissions pool.
