This is the realm of the angels, who are divided up into nine ascending orders: Angels, Archangels, Principalities, Virtues, Powers, Thrones, Dominions, Cherubim, and Seraphim. Pseudo-Dionysus the Areopagite arranged this division of angels in the late fifth century, with each order of angels having particular functions and responsibilities. This is the most common ordering of the angels, although other arrangements do exist.

Nature of The Angelic Realm

The Angelic realms are considered both immaterial and imperishable. Comprised primarily of spiritual essence rather than materialness, these realms are completely imperceptible to human senses.

Functions of the Angels

The angels can be divided into three groups of three--a trinity of trinities. The lowest group, comprised of Angels, Archangels and Principalities, are charged with communicating God’s will to humanity, with Principalities governing princes and nations; Archangels care for sacred things and function as messengers between God, the angelic hierarchy, and humanity; and Angels act as personal guardians.

The middle order, composed of Dominions, Virtues, and Powers, regulates divine governance. They are not interested in human affairs.

The highest order, consisting of Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones, is entirely focused on God, eternally contemplating and praising Him.

Other Names

The Angelic or Empyrean realm is sometimes referred to by a variety of other names such as the Supercelestial, Divine, Religious, Pythagorean or Intellectual realm. Human intellect is seen as superior to all other functions within humans, thus the association.
