What is Team Teaching?

Team teaching is a term coined to describe two or more teachers who partner up to teach a subject or several subjects centered around a common theme. This partnership gives teachers the flexibility to teach students in a whole group setting, or they may choose to split students up and adapt their lessons according to each group's overall ability level. This makes team teaching an effective method to differentiate instruction.

It also allows teachers to work closely together to discuss individual student strengths and weaknesses.

Benefits of Team Teaching

1. Collaboration is a powerful tool for teaching and learning. When teachers work together cooperatively, they are often able to accomplish much more than they would alone. Collaboration can boost teacher morale, makes teaching and learning fun, and often strengthens the quality of education that students receive. It is important to note, that for team teaching to work, the teachers in the team must be willing to make individual sacrifices for the greater good of the team.

2. Planning time is reduced. A collaborative approach naturally reduces the amount of time a teacher needs to do all the non-teaching duties such as lesson planning, contacting parents, and grading papers.  These time-consuming endeavors often leave teachers feeling exhausted and stressed. Having the ability to work together saves in planning time while giving teachers more ammunition to provide direct instruction.

3. Team teaching provides flexibility. The team can decide and adjust the way that they provide instruction. Having extra bodies provides the freedom for one teacher to provide whole group instruction while the other teacher monitors students to ensure that they are on task or do not need assistance.

On occasion, the team may feel it is best to split students up into strategic groups to differentiate instruction based on individual strengths and weaknesses.

4. Two pairs of eyes are better than one. Having more than one teacher in the room can provide a different perspective. One teacher may be able to see what the other one misses.  When students are working on individual practice problems, multiple teachers can work with multiple students, ensuring that more students receive the one-on-one attention that they need.

5. Teams can take advantage of individual strengths. Every individual teacher has a unique skill set that makes them effective. It is up to the team to figure out how to utilize those strengths to meet the needs of the students they serve. Some students may naturally connect and mesh with one teacher as opposed to another. When planning, the team needs to take factors such as these into account.

6. Teachers can learn from each other. Every teacher brings something to the table that other teachers can add to their toolkit.  Administrators should carefully weigh their decisions when establishing teams taking factors such as experience and personality make-up into consideration.

  Putting a veteran teacher with an inexperienced teacher can be beneficial for each member of the team.

7. Classroom management is naturally improved. It is hard for students to get away with things when there is more than one teacher in the room. What one misses, the other will likely see. Students will be less likely to test and push a teacher because there is strength in numbers.
