The Beatles Japanese Vinyl E.P. Collection Box Set

The Beatles E.P. Collection
The Beatles E.P. Collection Japanese box set. Apple Corps Ltd.

This Japanese box set dates from 1982. It is beautifully presented - the deep blue box is very well made and the gold lettering on the outside is shiny, crisp and precise. The catalogue number for this set, which is on the EMI/Odeon label, is EAS-30013.

Inside the box is a sheet with Japanese writing on both sides detailing the contents of the box. Apple Corps Ltd.

Inside the box the first thing you find is this single printed sheet with Japanese writing on both sides detailing the contents of the box. It's part of the great attention to detail that you find in all Japanese pressings. There are always additional inserts with information about the product and/or translations of the lyrics. Sadly this particular box set is missing its obi strip. An obi strip is a small piece of paper included on an LP or box set, usually wrapped around the outer left-hand side. The strip is there to provide information to the shopper about the item being sold.

Each of the discs comes in a cardboard sleeve that accurately replicates the original British picture sleeve. All pressings are mono (except for one - "The Inner Light" E.P. - which is in stereo). Each of the sleeves is housed in a protective, clear plastic outer sleeve.

An example of the rear of one of the sleeves, complete with its external fold-over tab construction. This also accurately replicates what the original cover would have looked like when it was first issued in the early 1960s.

The beautiful translucent red vinyl of these Japanese pressings is impressive. Apple Corps Ltd.

Probably the most impressive thing about this box set of Beatle E.P.'s is the vinyl itself. They have all been pressed using a bright red, translucent vinyl. They are on the black EMI/Odeon label. Note that the playing speed is 33 and 1/3, the same as a 12" long player record would be, not 45 r.p.m. like most singles and E.P.'s. Interesting.

Again, in the attention to detail stakes the Japanese are second-to-none. Inside each sleeve there is a four-page insert containing more detail about each track, recording information, release dates, etc. Both English and Japanese lyrics are also provided.

The Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" E.P. is beautifully reproduced for the Japanese box set. Apple Corps Ltd.

When the Beatles originally released the music from their Magical Mystery Tour television film in 1967 it was on a double E.P. set and featured six songs. Glued inside the gatefold cover was a full colour booklet with lots of photographs from the film, a cartoon re-telling of the plot, and the full lyrics to each song. These are all faithfully reproduced here. In the US (and for all other later editions), Magical Mystery Tour was released as an LP with an additional five songs included.
