Discussion of The Citadel's Admissions Standards:

The Citadel Military College of South Carolina admits roughly three out of four applicants, but the applicant pool tends to be self-selecting. Few lazy or immature students are going to apply to a college with a leadership-centered military style of education. The majority of successful applicants had both grades and standardized test scores that were average or above average. In the graph above, the green and blue dots represent admitted students. Most had SAT scores (RW+M) of 950 or higher, an ACT composite of 18 or higher, and a high school average of a "B-" or higher. You can see that The Citadel admits many "A" students.

Keep in mind that The Citadel's admission process is holistic -- the admissions folks make decisions based on much more than numerical data. To quote from the college's admissions website: "The Citadel seeks to determine acceptability through a thorough evaluation of each applicant's character, maturity, motivation, readiness for college, amenability to a regimented lifestyle, emotional stability, and potential to contribute to cadet life." To measure these other factors, The Citadel application asks for two references, a counselor recommendation, and details about your academic honors and awards, extracurricular activities, athletic participation, volunteer and community service efforts, participation in scouts or other programs, and employment history. If the application shows that you meet The Citadel's academic and character standards, you will also need to meet the school's medical and physical standards.
