Discussion of TCNJ's Admissions Standards:

The College of New Jersey has selective admissions, and over half of all applicants will be rejected. Students who get in tend to have standardized test scores and high school grades that are above average. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that the majority of successful applicants had high school averages of "B+" or better, combined SAT scores of 1150 or higher, and ACT composite scores of 24 or better. Your chances improve significantly if your grades are up in the "A" range.

Note that there are quite a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) mixed in with the green and blue in the middle the graph. Some students with grades and test scores that were on target for The College of New Jersey were not admitted. On the flip side, note that a few students were accepted with test scores and grades a bit below the norm. This is because TCNJ's admissions process is based on more than empirical data. The college uses the Common Application and has a holistic admissions process. The TCNJ admissions officers will be looking at the rigor of your high school courses, not just your grades. Also, the they will be looking for a winning essay, interesting extracurricular activities, an engaging short answer, and strong letters of recommendation. Students applying for Art, Music, or the seven-year Medical and Optometry programs have additional requirements. Finally, students must complete the TCNJ supplement to the Common Application and choose a major and alternate major. The level of demand for specific programs can have an effect on the admissions decision.
