15 Things We Learned From 'The Force Awakens' Theatrical Trailer

Oh yeah, we're going there. Because Star Wars!

By now, you've seen the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. A lot. If you're anything like me, you probably watched it at least fifty times by now.

Once you get a chance to sit back and live with the trailer for a bit, several things jump out at you. New details about the state of the galaxy, where characters are at in their personal journeys, and so on. Here's what I noticed.

Potential spoilers ahead.

Rey scavenges inside old Star Destroyers.

Daisy Ridley as Rey

We already knew Daisy Ridley's character Rey is a scavenger/survivalist living on the planet Jakku. We still know very little else about her, such as why she lives there, and how she's connected to the Skywalker clan's ongoing saga.

But living on Jakku gives her access to technology left over after a huge, decisive battle that occurred there several years ago, before the Empire was finally defeated. An earlier trailer showed the Millennium Falcon being chased by a TIE Fighter into the interior of a downed Star Destroyer.

This shot of Rey appears to be taking place in the same location.

Finn was "raised for one thing": fighting.

John Boyega as Finn
John Boyega as Finn in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. Lucasfilm Ltd.

John Boyega's Finn is a Stormtrooper who defects from the First Order to the Resistance. He's one of the main protagonists in the film, and will eventually go one-on-one with Kylo Ren in a lightsaber battle.

So how do you go from Stormtrooper to would-be Jedi? Apparently he's been trained as a soldier for most, if not all, of his life.

The big question is: Is he strong with the Force? It seems awfully unlikely he'd be able to take on Kylo Ren without that all-important trait.

Kylo Ren wants to finish what Darth Vader started.

Adam Driver as Kylo Ren
Adam Driver as Kylo Ren in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. Lucasfilm Ltd.

Whoever Kylo Ren really is (and it's likely he's related to the Skywalker clan in some way), he idolizes Darth Vader and intends to pick up where the Sith Lord left off thirty years ago.

But what is it of Vader's that Kylo wants to "finish"? Ruling over the galaxy? Or something more personal, like the destruction of Vader's enemies?

Whatever it is, it probably has something to do with Anakin Skywalker's original lightsaber -- which happens to also be the first lightsaber used by Luke, and a key plot point in The Force Awakens.

Poe Dameron gets captured and interrogated by Kylo Ren.

Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron

All we know of Poe Dameron is what actor Oscar Isaac said of him back at the 2015 Star Wars Celebration: "He's the best d*mn pilot in the galaxy." He leads a group of X-Wing fighter pilots known as Black Squadron, and he's a key member of the Resistance.

Clearly he's captured at some point in The Force Awakens and undergoes torture at the hands of Kylo Ren. This clip seemed to show Kylo trying to (painfully) extract information from Poe's mind using the Force.

The galaxy has changed drastically -- and so has Han Solo.

Harrison Ford as Han Solo

30 years is all it takes for the galaxy to forget the Jedi and the Rebel Alliance. It's all faded into stories that many don't believe to be true.

It begs the question: If the Jedi are just a myth, then where is Luke Skywalker? What happened to him after Return of the Jedi that he failed Yoda's edict to "pass on what you have learned"?

Han Solo remembers him, at least. In a beautiful bit of character development, Han has grown and changed a great deal since we first saw him in A New Hope. Back then he was downright flippant about "hokey religions" like the Jedi. He's come a long way. He seems to be serving as the Old Ben Kenobi mentor character in The Force Awakens.

These guys are in for a world of hurt.

Stormtroopers
Stormtroopers in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. Lucasfilm Ltd.

It looks like these Stormtroopers just laid waste to some kind of lakeside city. But what's that on the horizon?

Poe Dameron's Black Squadron, racing up the waterway to unleash some righteous payback, methinks.

Finn and Poe are going to be buds.

Everything we've seen so far suggests that Finn and Rey will meet on the junkyard world Jakku -- but they won't stay there. At some point they'll escape and meet up with Han Solo, who reveals to them the truth about their galaxy's history.

Eventually, Finn meets hotshot pilot Poe, and it looks like the two of them are going to become fast friends. Maybe Finn helps Poe escape from the First Order (see #4)?

Even the CGI visual effects look real.

An X-Wing fighter
An X-Wing fighter chases a TIE Fighter in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. Lucasfilm Ltd.

I'm loving how crystal clear the effects are. X-Wings, TIE Fighters and the Falcon are gloriously sharp as they fly through space or across a planet's surface.

J.J. Abrams' affinity for using practical effects naturally couldn't extend to these sorts of dogfights, but it looks like ILM put special attention into making even the CG spacecraft models look and feel very, very tangible.

Han takes Finn and Rey to a mystery location.

John Boyega and Harrison Ford
John Boyega and Harrison Ford in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. Lucasfilm Ltd.

What is this place? The stonework on the walls is evocative of Yavin, but what's with all the flags or banners or whatever-they-are?

It's known that location filming took place at an ancient Christian monastery off the coast of Ireland, on an island called Skellig Michael. Whatever's happening in this scene is probably part of what was shot there.

I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of that big red droid.

Somebody dies. And Rey experiences profound grief.

Daisy Ridley as Rey

In drama, there is nothing you can give your characters to deal with that carries more dramatic weight than death, or more specifically, the death of a loved one. And that certainly appears to be the case here.

Who is Rey mourning? I know who I think it is, but it's a huge spoiler if true, so I'm not saying. The answer's a fairly obvious one, though.

Starkiller Base really is a massive weapon built into a planet.

Starkiller Base
Starkiller Base from 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. Lucasfilm Ltd.

It's not much of a spoiler if it's revealed on StarWars.com: You're looking at Starkiller Base, an entire planet that's been converted into a super-weapon capable of destroying entire solar systems (aka, a star and all of the planets orbiting it). That's destruction on a level Grand Moff Tarkin could never have dreamed of.

A wider shot of Starkiller Base, as seen from afar, is visible in the top right corner of the theatrical poster.

It sucks to be this guy.

Battle scene

That dude in the air, right next to the X-Wing? He didn't jump out of the ship. He's a Stormtrooper who was fighting on the ground, and got blown way up into the air by one of the X-Wing's blasts.

Ouch.

Han and Leia are still together. Thank God.

Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford as Leia and Han

Marge and Homer separated. Mulder and Scully broke up. Okay, fine. But Han and Leia? They had better be together, even after all these years.

Happily, they are. And darn right, too. That one's sacred. J.J. Abrams and his team didn't dare screw with this relationship.

That expression, though...

Finn gets Luke's original lightsaber -- and he knows how to use it.

John Boyega as Finn
John Boyega as Finn in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. Lucasfilm Ltd.

Zoom in on that lightsaber hilt. It's unmistakable: as I mentioned above in #3, that's the lightsaber Obi-Wan Kenobi gave to Luke Skywalker, which Luke later lost on Bespin thanks to his father. Who, ironically, originally owned that lightsaber himself!

Probably due to the aforementioned death (see #10), by the time Finn gets his hands on Luke's saber, he's properly cheesed. And we all know who at...

Finn and Kylo: It's on.

John Boyega and Adam Driver
Adam Driver as Kylo Ren and John Boyega as Finn in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. Lucasfilm Ltd.

It's so on that Kylo loses the mask and hood and lets his hair down.

And given the snow, it stands to reason that they're fighting on the same planet within which Starkiller Base is installed.
