10 Times Kanye West Was Actually Kinda Awesome

"YOOOO WHY WON'T YOU LET ME BE GREAT!!!"

Whether you love to hate him, or hate to love him, Kanye West is going to be Kanye West. And today is his 38th birthday! You know, when he’s not interrupting at awards shows, offending handicapped concertgoers, or comparing himself to Jesus or Hitler, he's not really that bad. In fact, we found 10 times Kanye West was not only tolerable; he was actually kinda awesome, too.

When he is an influential and revolutionary musical artist

Sure, he's all ego and has referred to himself as the "end-all, be-all of music." But there's no denying 'Ye is one of the best rappers of all time and perhaps the most groundbreaking and experimental producer out today. From College Dropout to Yeezus, Kanye works with the best in the biz and proves his talent time and time again. According to many, he might even be a genius.

When he recovered from a near death experience

West not only survived a nearly fatal car accident in October 2002, he recorded his debut single a mere two weeks later — with his broken jaw still wired shut.

"The first time I heard 'Through the Wire' I immediately knew I was experiencing a defining moment in hip-hop. Kanye sounded like no other rapper out at the time. That was due, in part, to the fact that he was rhyming through the wire. Literally." — Henry Adaso, About.com's Rap/Hip-Hop Expert

When he pushed the fashion envelope

We have to say, Kanye's fashion game is pretty on point these days. While he still takes a few risks, his look is mostly tailored and polished (and probably a result of sitting front row at the biggest shows and rubbing elbows with the likes of Anna Wintour). But remember his earlier style? We can't say it was cover-worthy, but his fashion choices sure were entertaining for the rest of us.

When he finally admitted he might love someone more than himself

There's a part of us that believes Kanye and Kim Kardashian really are meant to be. They deserve each other. We never thought Kanye could love anyone other than Kanye, but he got his "dream girl" on love lockdown and the pair made it official when they wed in 2014. Let's just forget about "Bound 2" though, right?

When he's a really cool dad.

Of course Kanye is an over the top dad. But we kind of love him for that. Any father who is tries to shut down Disneyland for his 2-year-old daughter's birthday is a seriously cool dad. End of story.

Kanye's mother, Donda West, was the other leading lady in his life until she passed away in 2007. An English professor by trade, she was his biggest fan since he first started rapping in the third grade. Kanye wrote the song "Hey Mama" for his 2005 Late Registration album, as a tribute to his mother's love and unwavering support —singing "I want to scream so loud for you, 'cause I'm so proud of you."

When he actually apologized and settled some feuds

Everybody knows of his infamous "Imma let you finish..." stage-storming showdown with Taylor Swift and his fired-up feud with Jimmy Kimmel. Kanye is no stranger to starting up some beef with celebrities or entire companies. Even President Obama has called him a "jackass." And while we love his crazy rants about any and everything (for the laughs), we think it's even better when he apologizes and squashes the bad blood.

In this last interview as Bruce Jenner, we learned Kanye played a big role in Kim Kardashian's acceptance of her step-father's transition to Caitlyn Jenner. Kanye told Kim, "I’m nothing, if I can’t be me." The couple has been especially supportive of Caitlyn, even when she made her big Vanity Fair reveal the same day news spread of their second pregnancy.

When he ordered takeout Chinese food from jail

Only Kanye would pull a move like this. And we have to admit, it's pretty absurd and amazing. When he was arrested in 2008, after an altercation with paparazzi, he allegedly used his one phone call from jail to order takeout from the super-swanky Mr. Chow's. Because, Kanye West will always do whatever Kanye West wants to do.

Wait, we’re not actually sure this one is true. In fact, we see a CAPS LOCK rant coming on...
