10. "My Name Is" (1999)

"My Name Is" was the first single from Eminem's major label debut album The Slim Shady LP.  He received criticism for attacking both women and gay people, but it served as in introduction to the major artist to come.  One particular line attacking lesbians was changed by Eminem in order to earn clearance of the rhythm track by openly gay artist Labi Siffre from "I Got The..." Eminem's mother filed a $10 million slander lawsuit against him for lines about her in the song. "My Name Is" reached the top 10 on the rap songs chart and broke into the pop top 40. It earned a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.

9. "Without Me" (2002)

"Without Me" was released as the introductory single for the album The Eminem Show.  In humorous fashion, he announces that he is back so the world can continue on.  Eminem details what a miserable place it was without him.  Among those attacked in the lyrics of the song are Vice President Dick Cheney, the FCC, Limp Bizkit, and Moby. He also takes on his mother's lawsuit over the song "My Name Is." The song peaked at #2 in the US and #1 in many countries around the world.  "Without Me" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Record Of the Year. The accompanying music video earned four MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year.

8. "Not Afraid" (2010)

"Not Afraid" was the first single released from Eminem's album Recovery.  The song included a shift in tone to a more uplifting message about moving away from drugs and violence.  "Not Afraid" debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. The song sold 380,000 copies in its first week of release. The accompanying music video was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year. The album Recovery also debuted at #1 selling over 740,000 copies in its first week of release.

7. "When I'm Gone" (2005)

Eminem released "When I'm Gone" to introduce his first greatest hits album Curtain Call: The Hits.  The song presents poignant arguments for the artist going on indefinite hiatus.  However, it turned out that he did not exit from recording for anywhere as long as the song suggests.  "When I'm Gone" was a top 10 pop hit around the world. The music video for "When I'm Gone" dramatizes Eminem's relationship with his daughter Hailie and his ex-wife Kim.

6. "The Monster" featuring Rihanna (2013)

Eminem frankly discusses mental illness on this single from the album The Marshall Mathers LP 2.  It is his second official single collaboration with Rihanna following "Love the Way You Lie." Both singles hit #1 on the pop chart in the US. "The Monster" also broke into the adult pop top 40 and the Latin songs radio charts. It won a Grammy Award for Best Rap / Sung Collaboration. The hook was originally written by rising singer / songwriter Bebe Rexha when she was in a very dark personal space. The accompanying music video presents Rihanna as Eminem's therapist taking him through his past represented by previous videos in his career.

The single "The Real Slim Shady" introduced Eminem's landmark album The Marshall Mathers LP.  It is a broad-based critique of manufactured pop music delivered with satirical humor.  The lyrics reference a wide range of celebrities including Pamela Anderson, Will Smith, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and NSYNC. The song became Eminem's first #1 hit in the UK and reached #4 on the pop chart in the US.  "The Real Slim Shady" won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. The accompanying music video won two MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year and Best Male Video.

"Berzerk" is the first single from Eminem's album The Marshall Mathers LP 2.  It is a salute to old school rap and was produced by Rick Rubin who produced many classics from the old school.  The song features a sample from Billy Squier's rock hit "The Stroke" as well as the Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right" and Naughty By Nature's "Feel Me Flow."  "Berzerk" debuted at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold more than a million copies. It earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Performance and an MTV Video Music Awards nomination for Best Hip-Hop Video.

Eminem's tale of an obsessed fan named "Stan" lent its name to a now widely accepted term for overzealous music fans.  The song is powerful and disturbing coming to a climax depicting the ignored fan creating a recording of himself driving a car into a lake with his girlfriend in the trunk.  It features vocals from British singer Dido sampling her song "Thank You."  "Stan" was a #1 pop hit in the UK and broke into the top 40 in the US at mainstream pop radio.  Eminem's performance of the song at the 2001 Grammy Awards with Elton John drew both criticism and acclaim.

2. "Love the Way You Lie" featuring Rihanna (2010)

Released as a single from the album Recovery, "Love the Way You Lie" deals with the topic of domestic abuse.  The chorus was written by Skylar Grey with Eminem contributing the verses.  Rihanna's featured vocal performance came in the wake of her much-publicized experiences with domestic violence.  "Love the Way You Lie" was a #1 pop hit around the world spending seven weeks at the top in the US and becoming the second #1 pop hit from Recovery.  The song was nominated for Grammy Awards for Record Of the Year and Song Of the Year. This is the lead single from the soundtrack to the film 8 Mile.  The song presents the background of the movie's lead character Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith, Jr.  Eminem says that he wrote the song during breaks on the set filming 8 Mile. "Lose Yourself" became Eminem's first #1 pop hit single and spent 12 weeks at the top. It also went to #1 in most other major pop markets around the world. "Lose Yourself" won an Academy Award for Best Original Song From a Motion Picture. It also won Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Solo Performance.
