Discover your ancestors in these free online marriage databases and indexes. Some even offer digitized copies of the original marriage records for online viewing. In many cases, details on recent marriages may not be available due to privacy restrictions, but this typically depends on the law in that locality.

The majority of the marriage entries from the Civil Registration Index for England and Wales have been transcribed and put online by a diligent group of volunteers. Coverage is at 100% from 1837 through the early 1960s, with indexing continuing in the 1970s. Marriage index entries prior to 1912 do not give the surname of the spouse. For these marriage entries, click on the page number to see the names of the other's listed on the same page. Depending on the year, there will be names of up to 4 to 8 people who could be the spouse of the person you are interested in. More »

More than 5 million records from 450 Polish towns have already been indexed by this volunteer project, with more being added each month. The majority of these index entries come from vital registers, including marriage records, from the early 1800s through the early 1900s. Many are linked to digitized images. More than one million marriages occuring prior to 1901 are indexed in this database from the Illinois State Genealogical Society and the Illinois State Archives. Sources for the indexed marriages include original county clerks' marriage records, as well as published records of county genealogical societesand pivate individuals. The index includes the name of the bride and groom, the date of the marriage or issuance of the license, the name of the county in which the marriage took place, and the volume and page number for register or file number for licenses. The Italian Genealogical Group has a wonderful free database of indexes to over 1,825,000 marriages recorded by the New York City Health Department for the five Boroughs of New York City from 1908 to 1936, along with additional marriages for Brooklyn (1864-1907) and Manhattan (1866-1907). This database is indexed by Grooms only, the there is also a separate NYC Brides Marriage Record Index for selected years (not complete) of the Bronx, Kings, Manhattan, Richmond and Queens County brides' marriage records. The availability of marriage records is dependent on what each individual county chooses to offer; most counties have both current and historical marriage data included on the site (see county index dates for details). Once you've located a marriage of interest, you can use the site to request a copy of the marriage certificate (fee involved) from the appropriate county. This free database from Maine Genealogy includes 987,098 marriages reported to the state from 1892 to 1966, and from 1977 to 2009. Marriage records from 1967 to 1976 are not included in this database, reportedly due to unreadable computer discs.
