Hilary Duff became a teen TV star after landing the title role in Disney's hit TV show Lizzie McGuire. She soon began pursuing a pop music career in addition to activity. Her 2003 #1 hit album Metamorphosis turned Hilary Duff into a pop star. 

"Beat Of My Heart," the second single from the Most Wanted compilation album, has a distinct 80s influenced electro-pop sound. It was co-written and produced by Dead Executives. The song was frequently compared to the 80s work of teen pop stars Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. The accompanying music video presented a more mature image of Hilary Duff inspired by James Bond films.

In 2004 Hilary Duff starred in the film A Cinderella Story.  She recorded a cover of the Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed" with her sister Haylie for the movie's soundtrack. The original was the Go-Go's first chart hit in 1982. John Shanks produced the record and it is a faithful cover that sticks close to the original. The record was a top 10 pop hit in Australia.

Hilary Duff moved into a dramatic, rock-oriented feel for this first single from her self-titled album. The song was co-written by the pair of Kara DioGuardi and John Shanks. The accompanying music video topped MTV's Total Request Live video chart. "Fly" broke into the mainstream pop radio top 40. It earned Hilary Duff top 40 pop success in Australia and New Zealand.

Included on the soundtrack to The Lizzie McGuire Movie, "Why Not?" introduced many pop fans to the teen actress' pop music career.  It is a breezy bubblegum song from Hilary Duff that reached the top 20 on the pop singles chart in both Australia and New Zealand. Some criticized the fluffiness of the song's lyrics. The accompanying music video reached the top 10 on MTV's show Total Request Live.

For her comeback single Hilary Duff turned to a cheerful midtempo pop song co-written by Colbie Caillat and her frequent songwriting partner Jason Reeves. "Chasing the Sun" moves Hilary Duff forward into adult pop territory without abandoning the spirit of her earlier work. Veteran pop songwriter and producer Toby Gad handled the production here. The song brought Hilary Duff back to the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in seven years.

"Stranger" takes Hilary Duff into exotic dance music territory with an international twist. Speculation swirled as to whether the song was about her relationship with ex-boyfriend Joel Madden.  However, Hilary Duff stated that the song is actually about how she thinks her mother feels around her father. Released as the second single from the Dignity Album, "Stranger became Hilary Duff's second consecutive #1 dance hit. The song was praised for showing a more serious side of the singer. It hit #1 on the US dance chart while just barely scraping the bottom edges of the Billboard Hot 100.

4. "So Yesterday" (2003)

Songwriting and production team The Matrix, best known for their work with Avril Lavigne, worked on "So Yesterday." There were mixed reviews for the similarity in sound to such Avril Lavigne hits as "Complicated." However, the aim was to move Hilary Duff beyond the sound of her Radio Disney material. The song was released as the first single from the Metamorphosis album and became a top 10 pop smash in Canada and the UK while peaking just outside the top 40 in the US. "So Yesterday" reached #15 at mainstream pop radio.

Hilary Duff fully embraced anthemic bubblegum on this first single from the compilation album Most Wanted. Then boyfriend Joel Madden's production and songwriting team Dead Executives worked on the record. "Come Clean" is a somewhat pensive love song co-written by Kara DioGuardi and John Shanks.  As the second single from the album Metamorphosis it became Hilary Duff's first top 40 pop hit and also reached the top 40 at adult pop radio.  The song was certified gold for sales.  The accompanying music video was nominated for Best Pop Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.
