The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was founded in 1999. It is held at the Empire Polo Club in the desert near Indio, California. It has grown to be one of the world's top destination music festivals. In 2016 it will take place over two weekends in April. The lineups of artists for each weekend are the same. 2016 is a great year for fans of electronic pop and dance music. There is also a very strong lineup of British artists at the festival. The 2015 Coachella Festival sold nearly 200,000 tickets and earned $84.3 million.

Borns - Friday April 15 and 22

Garrett Borns performs under the stage name Borns. At age 10 he was a professional magician under the name Garrett the Great. Signed to Interscope Records, Borns released his debut single "10,000 Emerald Pools" in November 2014. It led to a live performance on Conan in January 2015 and Late Night with Seth Meyers in March 2015. He released the follow up single "Electric Love" and both became top 25 hits at alternative radio. He toured with Charli XCX and Bleachers in the summer of 2015.The debut album Dopamine followed in October. It reached #24 on the overall album chart and #2 on the alternative and rock album charts.

Ellie Goulding - Friday April 15 and 22

Ellie Goulding became a sensation in 2010 when she won the BBC's Sound of 2010 poll. She followed the accolade with the top 5 charting UK pop single "Starry Eyed." Late in 2010 she went all the way to #2 with a cover of Elton John's classic "Your Song." In 2011 she crossed the Atlantic and became a pop star in the US with her #2 hit "Lights." Her music often straddles the borderline between pop and dance music. In 2015 she scored two top 20 pop smashes with "Love Me Like You Do" and "On My Mind." Her latest album Delirium was a #3 charting hit.

Jack U - Friday April 15 and 22

Jack U is the name adopted for a stage and recording collaboration between DJs Diplo and Skrillex. Their first collaborative album Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack U was released in February 2015 and landed inside the top 30 on the album chart. It included the top 10 smash pop hit single "Where Are U Now" featuring vocals by Justin Bieber. The pair won Grammy Awards for both Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance Recording. On their own, they are two of the top names in current dance music. Together they make a powerhouse team.

Of Monsters and Men - Friday April 15 and 22

Of Monsters and Men are an Icelandic folk-pop band. They earned international acclaim in 2012 when their single "Little Talks" soared into pop charts around the world. It reached #12 pop in the UK and #20 in the US, but it also topped the alternative radio chart while reaching the top 10 at adult pop radio. The group's first two albums My Head Is an Animal and Beneath the Skin have both reached the top 10 in the US. Of Monsters and Men toured in North American in the fall of 2015.

Years and Years - Friday April 15 and 22

Years and Years are a British electronic pop band. The trio came together in 2010. Their first single "I Wish I Knew" was released in 2012. The fourth single "Desire" released in 2014 finally took off in the UK and reached #22 on the pop singles chart. Years and Years gained major exposure by winning the BBC's Sound of 2015 poll. Two months after receiving the honor the trio's single "King" hit #1 on the UK pop singles chart.  The song also edged into the top 40 at mainstream pop radio in the US. The follow up "Shine" hit #2 in the UK. The debut album Communion was released in July 2015 and hit #1 on the UK album chart while climbing into the top 50 in the US.

AlunaGeorge - Saturday April 16 and 23

AlunaGeorge is a British electronic pop duo made up of Aluna Francis who sings lead vocals and George Reid who handles production and instrumental tracks. The pair finished second in the BBC Sound of 2013 poll. Their UK pop breakthrough came in 2013 with the #17 charting single "Attracting Flies." Their follow up single "You Know You Like It" also reached the top 40. However, the duo did not return to mainstream pop charts until French dance artist DJ Snake remixed "You Know You Like It" and released it as an official single in October 2014. The result was a breakthrough pop and dance hit in the US. It reached the top 10 at mainstream pop radio and #2 on the dance chart. AlunaGeorge is due to release their second album I Remember on April 29, 2016.

CHVRCHES - Saturday April 16 and 23

Scottish electronic pop band CHVRCHES was formed in 2011. They placed fifth in the BBC's Sound of 2013 poll. The group earned crucial US exposure at the 2013 South By Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. The US television debut of CHVRCHES came in June 2013 when they performed live on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Late in 2013 the single "The Mother We Share" broke into the alternative radio chart in the US and ultimately peaked at #12 earning a gold certification for sales. The group's second album Every Open Eye broke into the top 10 of the US album chart in September 2015. It includes the top 20 charting alternative hit "Leave a Trace."

Grimes - Saturday April 16 and 23

Canadian electronic and alternative pop artist Claire Boucher performs under the name Grimes. She released her first two albums Geidi Primes and Halfaxa in 2010 then signed a contract with legendary British independent label 4AD in 2011. Her 2012 album Visions brought widespread critical acclaim. The music video for the single "Oblivion" was hailed as an artistic triumph. Grimes' fourth album Art Angels broke into the top 40 of the US album chart in November 2015.

Halsey - Saturday April 16 and 23

Singer-songwriter Ashley Frangipane performs and records under the name Halsey. She signed her first recording contract in 2014 with the independent label Astralwerks. Her first exposure had come through posting cover songs and parodies on YouTube. Halsey electrified audiences at the 2015 South By Southwest music festival. She opened for Imagine Dragons in concert in the summer of 2015 and released her single "New Americana." It became a top 30 hit across adult pop, rock, and mainstream pop radio. The debut album Badlands, a concept album about a dystopian society, hit #2 in August 2015.

Zedd - Saturday April 16 and 23

Zedd is the stage name for Russian-German dance music DJ and artist Anton Zaslavski. He soared into the US pop singles chart in 2013 with the top 10 charting single "Clarity" featuring vocals from British singer Foxes. It was also a #1 charting dance single and reached the pop top 10 in the UK. The recording earned him a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. He has followed it with the top 20 pop hits "Stay the Night" featuring vocals from Hayley Williams of Paramore and "I Want You To Know" featuring vocals from Selena Gomez. Zedd's album True Colors was a top 5 hit in May 2015.

The 1975 - Sunday April 17 and 24

Members of The 1975 first began performing music together as teenagers in 2002. After playing and recording under a wide range of names they finally settled on The 1975 after being inspired by writings in a Jack Kerouac beat poetry book with the date "1 June, The 1975." They broke into the UK pop charts in 2012 with the top 30 charting hit "The City." "Chocolate," the first single from their EP Music For Cars, was released in March 2013. It became the band's breakthrough in the US in 2014 reaching the top 20 at both adult pop and rock radio. The self-titled debut full-length album appeared in September 2013 and topped the UK album chart while going to #28 in the US. With strong radio support and critical acclaim for singles released in advance, the second album I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It topped the album charts in both the UK and the US in February 2016.

Calvin Harris - Sunday April 17 and 24

British dance music DJ and pop artist Calvin Harris is one of the most successful of pop and dance artists around the world. He has hit #1 or #2 on the UK pop singles chart with twelve songs since 2007. In the US seven singles have reached the top 20. He collaborated with Rihanna on "We Found Love," one of the biggest pop hit singles of all time. His most recent album Motion reached the top 5 on the US album chart in October 2014. Calvin Harris has twice been nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Dance Recording.

The Chainsmokers - Sunday April 17 and 24

Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall formed the electronic dance music duo The Chainsmokers in 2012. They earned a viral hit in 2014 with the single "#Selfie." It was a novelty hit about people taking "selfie" photos with their cellphones and soared into the top 10 on the dance chart in the US. It also climbed to #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #11 on the UK pop singles chart. They gained more critical acclaim in 2015 with the single "Roses" which became the duo's first top 10 pop hit in early 2016. The debut album from The Chainsmokers is expected later in 2016.

Major Lazer - Sunday April 17 and 24

Major Lazer will be the second opportunity for those at Coachella to catch DJ Diplo. Major Lazer is the electronic music collective he leads along with Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. After two critically acclaimed albums, Major Lazer's third Peace Is the Mission launched them into the pop mainstream with the top 10 pop smash "Lean On," a collaboration with French artist DJ Snake and Danish singer MO. It was a top 10 pop hit around the world going to #1 in many different countries. The next Major Lazer album Music Is the Weapon is due for release in summer 2016.

Sia - Sunday April 17 and 24

Australian singer-songwriter Sia earned critical acclaim for her solo albums Some People Have Real Problems and We Are Born. However, it was her featured vocal performances and songwriting collaborations on David Guetta's top 10 hit "Titanium" and Flo Rida's top 10 hit "Wild Ones" in 2011 that brought her into the pop mainstream. Supported by a compelling music video, her 2014 solo single "Chandelier" proved to be Sia's pop breakthrough as a solo artist. It climbed into the pop top 10 in both the US and UK. It was followed by the top 20 hit "Elastic Heart." Sia's latest solo album This Is Acting was released in January 2016.
