2012 Toyota Tacoma Features & Options

The Toyota Tacoma has been the leading seller in the compact truck market for many years, outselling its nearest competitor by almost two-to-one. At a time when some manufacturers are giving up on small trucks, Toyota is improving and refining the Tacoma, and making it clear they plan to continue production.

In 2012, the Tacoma receives a face lift, with a redesigned hood, bumper, grille and headlights. Inside, Toyota has changed the instrument cluster and center dash, including the truck's heater/AC controls. The console, dash, door panels and much of the remaining interior panels are now black.

Engine and transmission combinations remain unchanged for 2012.

Tacoma Cab and Bed Configurations

The 2012 Toyota Tacoma is available as a Regular Cab, Access Cab and Double Cab. The PreRunner Double Cab and 4WD Double Cab can be configured with a 60.3 inch bed or a 73.5 inch bed. Remaining Tacoma trucks are fitted with only the 73.5 inch bed.

2012 Toyota Tacoma Engines

Tacoma's 2.7 liter 4-cylinder engine produces 159 horsepower and 180 pound feet of torque. This engine is standard in the 2WD Regular Cab and Access Cab, the PreRunner Access Cab and Double Cab and the 4WD Regular Cab and Access Cab.

Bumping up to Tacoma's 4.0 liter V6 engine gives you 236 horsepower and 266 pound feet of torque. The V6 is standard in the 2WD Tacoma X-Runner and the 4WD Double Cab, and optional in 4WD Access Cab trucks and PreRunner Access Cab and Double Cabs.

2012 Toyota Tacoma Transmissions

  • Tacoma's 4-cylinder engine can be coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic.
  • The V6 is available with a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Tacoma Truck Fuel Economy Ratings

Tacoma fuel mileage ratings range from 21 city / 25 highway for the 2WD 4 cylinder equipped with a 5-speed transmission to 15 city / 19 highway for the 4WD truck with a 6-speed manual transmission.

All Tacoma trucks are equipped with a 21.1 gallon fuel tank.

Towing with the Tacoma Pickup Truck

Tacoma's towing capacity ranges from 3,300 pounds to a maximum of 6,500 pounds for trucks equipped with the V6 engine and tow package.

Tacoma Brakes, Steering & Safety Systems

All 2012 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks have power assist front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The Tacoma also features anti-lock brakes with Electronic Braking Distribution, Brake Assist, Electronic Traction Control and Automatic Limited Slip Differential. Steering is variable assist power rack and pinion.

Tacoma pickup trucks have 3-point seatbelts in all seating positions. You'll find driver and passenger airbags and front-seat-mounted side air bags. Access Cab and Double cab trucks have active headrests on the front seats -- they move forward and up to minimize whiplash if you're involved in a rear impact crash.

Tacoma Truck Special Packages for 2012

Toyota offers several packages for its Tacoma pickup trucks:

The Tacoma X-Runner has been around for several years, and is the performance model for owners who want a pickup with looks, power and handling. X-Runner trucks are created from 2WD Access Cab Tacomas. Add a 4.0 liter V6, a 6-speed manual transmission, sport tuned suspension and you get a truck that can do 0 to 60 in less than 7 seconds and corner as well as many performance cars. If that's not enough, the dealer can add a supercharger to bump the truck's power to 304 horsepower and 334 pound feet of torque.

If you're just after looks, the X-Runner has that, too. Its lower stance, full body skirt kit, hood scoop, fog lamps and color matched mirrors, bumpers and door handles add positive visual appeal.

X-Runner Tacoma trucks are only available in Barcelona Red, Black Sand Pearl or Nautica Blue Metallic.

Tacoma's SR5 Package is available on 2WD Access Cab trucks, the PreRunner Access Cab or Double Cab, and the 4WD Access or Double Cab. The package adds power mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, variable speed wipers, a chrome grille surround, a chrome rear bumper and color matched front bumper, fog lights (V6 trucks only), a sliding rear window, bucket seats with SR5 trim, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, sunvisors with mirrors and extenders, a back up camera with a monitor in the mirror and the SR5 badges. The SR5 package is a good way to load up your Tacoma for less cost than tacking on individual options.

Two TRD packages are available for PreRunner Tacoma trucks:

  • The TRD Off-Road Package adds an off-road tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks, locking rear differential, 16-inch alloy wheels and BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires. It also includes an engine skid plate, front tow hook, fog lights, keyless entry, an overhead console with compass and temp gauge, sport seats with sport fabric trim and a leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The front bumper and Overfenders are color matched to the vehicle and the rear bumper is chrome. A back up camera is mounted in the handle of the tailgate and the sliding rear window holds privacy glass. TRD Off-Road graphics are along each bedside. That's just a portion of the features you'll find within the package.
  • Another option is the TRD Sport Package, which includes a number of the same features as the Off-Road Package. The off-road tuned suspension is replaced by a sport tuned suspension with 17-inch alloy wheels and Bilstein sport shocks. The grille surround, bumpers, door handles and mirrors are color matched to the truck, which comes with a hood scoop. TRD Sport graphics on the truck's bedsides identify the package.
  • The T/X package can be added to the TRD Off-Road Package, and includes black 16-inch bead-lock wheels with BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires, black tube-style side steps and unique side graphics. The T/X Pro adds a TRD cat-back exhaust system to make the truck sound as good as it looks.

Like other package deals, the TRD options are less expensive as a group than they would be by adding them individually. All components are covered by Toyota's 3 year/36000 mile warranty.

Bottom Line

Toyota has proven it can build a strong, reliable compact pickup that's not only capable of hauling and towing, but is also attractive and fun to drive. The 2012 version of the Tacoma carries on the tradition.
