How to communicate in Arabic and an Indian language

When learning Indian languages, the differences among them can be confusing for non-native speakers.  Some estimates put the total number of Indian languages in the thousands. The official number of Indian languages is 22, with Hindi the most widely spoken. English is fairly common in major urban areas of India, but may be less prevalent in rural parts of the country.

Arabic, however, is not as widely spoken on the subcontinent, so if you're an English speaker looking to communicate in both Arabic and an Indian language while traveling to India, it is helpful to have a translation guide.

For Arabic speakers, there are some similarities among the Indian languages and Arabic dialects. For those learning Arabic in addition to an Indian language, it's useful to be able to translate common words from one language to the others.

First, take a look at this list of common words, phrases and sentences in three of the major Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali and Marathi, translated into Arabic. Knowing these can prove very useful for people visiting India, particularly those who speak Arabic as a primary or secondary language and aren't familiar with the differences. Some are subtle, and some are more pronounced, as you'll see in the chart below.
