Tratar Conjugation in Spanish, Translation, and Examples

The Spanish verb tratar means to try or to treat, although it has many different uses. It is a regular -ar verb, so it follows the same conjugation pattern as other -ar verbs, like cenar and bajar. In this article you'll find tratar conjugations in the indicative mood (present, past and future), subjunctive mood (present and past), imperative mood, and other verb forms.

Using the Verb Tratar in Spanish

One of the most common translations of the verb tratar is "to try." In order to talk about trying to do something, you must include the preposition de: tratar de. For example, El estudiante trata de sacar buenas notas (The student tries to get good grades). Other verbs that mean to try to do something are intentar and probar. However, in order to talk about trying or tasting foods, the only one of the three that can be used is probar.

The Spanish verb tratar can also be translated as "to treat." The following are some examples: El jefe trata bien al empleado (The boss treats the employee well) or Deben tratar la enfermedad con antibióticos (They must treat the disease with antibiotics). However, tratar does not mean to pay for someone or to offer them something special like "to treat" does in English.

The verb tratar can also mean to address or deal with something. For example, Tenemos que tratar este tema importante (We have to address this important topic). Finally, when followed by the preposition de, as a reflexive or non-reflexive verb, tratarse de or tratar de can also be used to talk about what something is about. For example, ¿De qué trata la historia? (What is the story about?), La historia se trata de un lobo feroz (The story is about a fierce wolf).

Tratar Present Indicative

Yo	trato	I try	Yo trato de ser una buena persona.
Tú	tratas	You try	Tú tratas de sacar buenas notas.
Usted/él/ella	trata	You/he/she tries	Ella trata de respetar las leyes de tránsito.

Tratar Preterite Indicative

There are two verb tenses to refer to the past in Spanish: the preterite and the imperfect. The preterite is used to describe punctual actions or completed actions in the past.

Yo	traté	I tried	Yo traté de ser una buena persona.
Tú	trataste	You tried	Tú trataste de sacar buenas notas en la escuela.
Usted/él/ella	trató	You/he/she tried	Ella trató de respetar las leyes de tránsito.
Nosotros	tratamos	We tried	Nosotros tratamos de comer bien.
Vosotros	tratasteis	You tried	Vosotros tratasteis de ayudar al jefe.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas	trataron	You/they tried	Ellos trataron de aprender algo nuevo cada día.

Tratar Imperfect Indicative

The imperfect tense is used to give descriptions or for ongoing or habitual actions in the past. It is usually translated to English as "was trying" or "used to try."

Yo	trataba	I used to try	Yo trataba de ser una buena persona.
Tú	tratabas	You used to try	Tú tratabas de sacar buenas notas en la escuela.
Usted/él/ella	trataba	You/he/she used to try	Ella trataba de respetar las leyes de tránsito.
Nosotros	tratábamos	We used to try	Nosotros tratábamos de comer bien.
Vosotros	tratabais	You used to try	Vosotros tratabais de ayudar al jefe.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas	trataban	You/they used to try	Ellos trataban de aprender algo nuevo cada día.

Tratar Future Indicative

Yo	trataré	I will try	Yo trataré de ser una buena persona.

Tratar Periphrastic Future Indicative

Verb forms that have several components are called periphrastic verb forms. The periphrastic future is formed with the present tense conjugation of the verb ir (to go), the preposition a and the infinitive of the verb.

Yo	voy a tratar	I am going to try	Yo voy a tratar de ser una buena persona.
Tú	vas a tratar	You are going to try	Tú vas a tratar de sacar buenas notas en la escuela.

Tratar Present Progressive/Gerund Form

The present progressive is formed with the verb estar plus the present participle or gerund.

Present Progressive of Tratar: está tratando

is trying -> Ella está tratando de respetar las leyes de tránsito.

Tratar Past Participle

The past participle is used to form compound tenses such as the present perfect, which are tenses that use haber as an auxiliary verb.

Present Perfect of Tratar: ha tratado

has tried -> Ella ha tratado de respetar las leyes de tránsito.

Tratar Conditional Indicative

Yo	trataría	I would try	Yo trataría de ser una buena persona, pero es muy difícil.

In Spanish there are two possibilities for conjugating the imperfect subjunctive. The tables below show both options.
