Tuskegee University Description:

Tuskegee University first opened its doors in 1881 under the leadership of Booker T. Washington. Since then, the university has had many notable alumni including writer Ralph Ellison and singer Lionel Richie. The school is located in Tuskegee, Alabama, 40 miles east of Montgomery. Tuskegee was the first historically black university to have its campus designated as a Registered National Historical Landmark.

The university has a healthy 14 to 1 student / faculty ratio. Undergraduates can choose from 39 majors, and fields in business, the biological sciences and psychology are the most popular.
