Discussion of Delaware's Admissions Standards:

The University of Delaware is a selective public university located in Newark. About a third of all applicants will not get admitted, and successful applicants tend to have grades and standardized test scores that are above average. In the scattergram above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that the majority of successful applicants had high school grades of "B+" or better, combined SAT scores of 1100 or higher (RW+M), and ACT composite scores of 22 or better. Your chances of receiving an acceptance letter are best if you have an "A" average and SAT score over 1200.

Realize that there are quite a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) mixed in with the green and blue in the middle of the graph. Some students with grades and test scores that were on target for the University of Delaware did not win admission. At the same time, some students were accepted with test scores and grades a little bit below the norm. This is because Delaware uses the Common Application and has a holistic admissions process. The university is interested in more than grades. The admissions folks will be looking at the rigor of your high school courses, not just your GPA. Also, the they will be looking for a winning essay, interesting extracurricular activities, an engaging short answer, and strong letters of recommendation. It's also important to recognize that different programs have different admissions requirements, and students who want to study music at Delaware will need to audition, and art majors need to submit an electronic portfolio.

In Delaware's supplement to the Common Application, you'll have the opportunity to explain a bad grade (Delaware wants to see "B" grades or better on your transcript) and describe why you are interested in the university. The latter is a great place to demonstrate your interest.
